Jeff (#3)'s directions worked perfectly! Thank you! Saved me over $300!
The tail lights are out on a 1996 jeep cherokee laredo and dash board lights. Break lights work fine. How can I fix this problems. The fuse box and ground wire on the back have been check and are working. HELP
Thanks a million! Just like you said, the bulb had melted down the plastic around the little ground plate on both sides of the car. What's amazing is that I replaced the entire tail light assembly on one side last year. They really don't make these things to last, do they? ;)
Your fix worked like a charm. Thanks again!

Message # 3 worked like a charm. Good Instructions. I guess they are necessary when you drive a JEEP!
The left-rear running lights went out when i pressed the brakes on my 2002 jeep grand cherokee. I followed the directions from Kevin in NY (message #3) and it worked perfectly. Cheers Mate!
2002 Grand Cherokee with brake light issue. Driver-side was out, changed all 3 brake light bulbs now all 3 are out. Tried #3 but no luck. Tried all 3 metal contacts but no luck. any ideas?
Thank you Kevin from NY! Post #3
I fixed my brake lights cause of your suggestion. My brake lights would go off when I pressed the breaks in with my head lights on. It was the ground prong behind the socket on the tail light assembly. Don't let mechanics rip you off with this easy fix.
Hi, I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have all lights except running tail lights. I have changed all the bulbs and the fuse but the running tail lights still do not work. Please help.

Reply #3 and #9 above worked in 5 minutes! Good job, guys!!
I pryed the contact plate up just enough to insert a folded small square of aluminum foil packed under the contact so this will never happen again...as one forum mechanic suggested...works great.
My name us steve and i have a 95 jeep geand cherokee limited and when i turn on my headligjts my parking lights dont go on but my brakd light work fine does anyone know what the pronlem could be
2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo:
Kevin from post # 3 is a genius! His fix finally worked after dealing with this problem for at least 2 years. We now finally have tail lights and brake lights.
To raise the ground contact, I folded a thin strip of aluminum foil and slid it under the contact. That did the trick. Thanks you again.
I TRIED JEFF AND KEVIN AND EVERYBODY ELSE AND IT WORKED FOR ME SO SAVE ME A LOT OF MONEY THANKS GUYS
I tried this suggestion from a Jeff in Fort Meyers Florida also and it worked for me.
"This is the corrective method for your brake lights not working when your headlights are on(2000 Jeep Cherokee Larado).
1) The cause of the problem is heat from the bulb.
2) Remove the light assembly as if you were going to change a bulb.
3) Turn the socket and remove it from the taillight assembly and set it aside(check to be sure your bulb is not burnt out).
4) Look at the opening, you will see 3 flat chrome colored contacts on the assembly.
5) Notice the one by it self at the top of the opening, that is the “ground”.
6) If you look closely you will notice the plastic around the ground contact has shrunk a little bit, this caused the contact to pull away from the socket, causing the problem.
7) With a small flat head screwdriver, VERY GENTLY pry up the contact so it stays slightly upward by itself.
8) Re-insert the bulb assembly back into the housing and press your brake petal with your lights on.
9) You should be in good to go!
10) Tools: Phillips head screwdriver and a small flat head screwdriver.
11) Time : 5 minutes per light "
This suggestion really works. Saved me a lot of money rather than taking to a shop.
I cant getr my brake lights off. I dont have anyone who knows what they are doing, please help. I fix my own cars but I am stuck on anything electric. thank you
Damn. Same problem, brake light works, lights work, but brake and regular light it goes off. Reply #3 is correct for fixing this. Don't buy a new bulb, it's just the contacts...
Thanks.. 5years later :-)
the problem of the brake light was not on when brake applied was due to the light sockets themselves. One of the socket did not make contact with the tail light circuitry. The cause was one or more (left or right)sockets were bad.To solve the problem, turn on your light and remove then reinstall one by one until all the lights are on. If you have the problem with the brake light did not turn on, there must be one of the socket is bad.
I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I am having same problem lights off brake lights work lights on left brake light goes out, followed number 3 it worked UNTIL I started my car and the problem was back if anyone knows anything PLEASE help...thank you
My tail lights would work but when I applied the brake the left tail would go out all together. Post #3s advice worked great Thanks
"Rear Brake light works, other two dont, not fuse, not contacts"
Ok I think I have you all beat! My rear middle brake light works, my hazards, blinkers and tail lights work. BOTH my brake lights DO NOT WORK.
We tested the voltage on the individual rear brake light wires and we have voltage right through to the connector plug that connects to the rear tail light assembly. Therefore I tried to bend up the contacts, replaced bulbs to no avail.
The brake switch can't be the problem if we have voltage coming through the line when I depress the brake pedal. So therefore its a big huge coincidence that BOTH rear brake light assemblies died at the same time and have to be replaced? Can this be correct?
Any suggetions? this is a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Thanks Kevin (Post #3). Your solution worked perfectly. We have had headaches with this for years. It took no more than 10 minutes for the fix.

Thanks to Kevin!
No doubt saved hundreds of dollars of labor and/or unnecessary parts.
"Light fix works"
Just fixed the tail light problem on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo using Kevin's fix in post #3. It took a few attempts to get the ground contact in the correct position but everything is working great now. Thanks Kevin!
"Lights out, Remote start start out"
Finally some one mentioned that the tail light fuse is incorporated in the parking light fuse.
That helped a lot.
I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a 3.1 Litre Diesel engine.
Recently my Clifford remote start system stopped working.
I looked and called everywhere to find details of this system, but in Spain no one has a clue.
After realizing that both tail lights were out I checked the fuse which was ok.
I performed the fix of post#3 and got the lights to work.
And Voila.. also the remote start system works again.
Some how it is connected through the tail lights.

OK #3's directions worked....almost. My orig problem was my right brake light wasn't working. I followed #3's directions and now the brake light works, but the right tail (running) light doesn't. Any suggestions??? ...
