Volvo-850 - OverHeating

I own a 1994 Volvo 850 non turbo, while driving yesterday the car overheated. I came home and let it sit, my coolant level was down so I added 1 gallon of water. I let it idle for about 15 minutes and it started to smoke. The oil looks fine but I cant find a leak and cant tell if it is the water pump or radaitor. Is ther a way to tell when either goes bad?

if you pull the hose off of the top of the radiator and start the car it will show you how much water presure you have some what

Might be the water temperature sensor. I have a 1994 Volvo 850 just bought with an overheating problem which I am checking out.
