Is the automatic transmission in Vanagons with gas engines, 2-wheel drive, a reliable unit? anyone have any problems?

the automatic transmission in a vanagon is the best deal.The manual trans. has a problem called "the suddent death syndrome" one of the working component breaks due to design flaw. it happens around 100, 000 miles. The automatic trans offers a good speed pick-up because it maintains the engine rpm higher, thus higher torque. Well maintained and with a good oil cooler they are very reliable.
