Volkswagen-Eurovan - how do I get the refrigerator to work?

Just bought a 93 westfalia eurovan cv with no owners manual. I can't work anything- does the fridge run on battery and propane? It is more like a mini freezer sunk into the counter next to the stove. I have no idea how to use the stove or furnace or water for that matter. Also I cannot unscrew the cap of the anti- freeze container and I can't see through it. I have had 3-4 people try-is there a trick? Thanks for any help. Lana

Are you guys still looking to find out how to use your van? I have a 92 that every thing works on and I also have all the instructions form VW. i could make a copy for you or just run through it on the phone. you can call me at 912-844-3886.for the stove, turn on the gas under the van at the front of the tank. then hold down the knob while lighting the burner, wait 15 sec. relese. the sink should turn on when you turn the knob on top of it to the left. note: water pump is in the water tank. the fridge gets turned on by the front control panel near the map light. hold down the button that looks like a snow flake, while pushing the "I/O" button. if the battery light flashes, the rechargable battery is dead. plug the van in, or replace the deep-cycle battery. (behind the cover in the back of van, across from the water tank.) if some stange electrical stuff happons, check the grounds behind the drivers door-post next to the sink. you will have to unbolt the seatbelt. good-luck, -Jonathan

Jonathan, I have a question, does the deep cycle battery get charged only by an outside source such as beeing plugged in or will it charge when the motor is running?Dan.

I have a van where the refrigerator obviously had a melt-down. I rectified this by retrofitting a new 1.7cu ft dorm fridge. Step 1) Cut off surrounding aluminum with angle grinder. Step 2) place new fridge (without surround) in place of old fridge. Step 3) IMPORTANT: new fridge will not have adequate ventilation and only run on power pole AC. Simply add an inverter, transfer switch and temperature operated switch/fan and you are golden. This may seem difficult but you can pick all of the stuff up at about USD$120. That sure beats Go Westy's cheapest USD$645 model.Need more info? Post me back.

The deep cycle battery should charge while you are driving/running the engine... it pays to double check the water levels.. and, if planning on several days... plug in for 24 hours to get a good charge - as driving will just maintain levels...
