Volkswagen-Cabrio - Cabrio Radio Code

I'm trying to enter the security code in my stock VW Cabrio radio (1995) after having the battery disconnected for a while. When the radio comes on it says "SAFE" instead of "CODE". The instructions say to hold down the MODE and SCAN buttons at the same time in order to enter the security code. When I do that, the word "SAFE" starts blinking, but then comes back on solid. It doesn't change to "CODE" like its supposed to do. What did I do wrong, and how do I fix it?Thanks

I am having the same problem, it's rediculous to even have a lock out code! my question is what is the 4 digit code number? With much appreciation.

I, too, had work done on my '93 cabriolet where battery was disconnected. I have "safe" on my radio. I do have the code -0530- but don't know how you enter it --from the radio selection numbers? no zero. Can you help me?
