AC compessor does not engage, intermittenly, was happening once in a while, then would work fine for a period, now no cold air. System is charged, was there a problem with the low pressure switch?

I have an 87 celica GT-S and I just found out that it has a vacuum switch that is mounted under the intake that is part of the A/C. Check your hood for the vacuum diagram and see if yours has one as well that might be your problem. Not sure what the switch does as my car had a fire that the previous owner caused while replacing the head gasket. I have it running perfect now but the switch is melted so I by passed it till I can get a new one.
