1995 Trans Am radio controls

My Trans Am has radio controls in the steering wheel. Recently, everytime I turn the wheel the radio goes into scan mode or changes stations. Has anyone encountered this problem and if so what did you do to repair it? This feature isn't that important to me so if I can disable it that would also work. Obviously the Pontiac dealer wants a lot of money just to diagnose the problem. I would like to avoid this if I could.
