To help you understand let me give the history first. My Fiero like most had the clutch go at about 25k mi. So I had it replaced. Then about 35 k mi later I was having a problem where when the transmission was engaged at a light with the clutch pedal depressed. The transmission would start to engage moving the car. Knowing about the clutch I just figured it was time again for a new clutch. I had it replaced but it turned out to not be the problem. It ended up being the master cylinder for the hydraulic clutch. I replaced that and it ran fine.
I only put a few hundred miles on the car in the next 5 years. Then I had a need for another car and decided to start driving the Fiero since it wasn't holding any value. I've put about 3, 000 on it since the clutch and master cylinder were replaced. When I started driving again there seemed to be some slipping during heavy acceleration. I wasn't sure what was causing that but it started getting worse. So, I tried bleeding the hydraulics at the clutch slave valve.
A few weeks after that I was driving and the car started having problems shifting gears. It was hard to get it into gear. This was all of a sudden and in a matter of several lights it no longer would shift. I found that if the car is off I can shift into each gear without any problem However, I cannot start the car with the transmission in gear. It feels like the clutch pedal isn't engaging all the way, not letting the switch that must be made to start the car to engage.
Based on your experience do you feel this might be the clutch slave or something in the clutch? I saw some articles that indicated if you replace the master cylinder it is only a matter of time before the slave also goes. I was thinking of trying to replace the slave but I don't see an easy way to get access to the mounting nuts on the backside of the slave. How do you get to them? Do you have any insight in what might be the problem?
