Plymouth-Breeze - TIMING BELT

Can anyone advise by email please. If the timing belt breaks, does it damage the engine, or will it just stop. I have owned the car 5 years, and live in the UK. As you may understand American car parts are expensive over here so i dont want to be replacing valves etc. The breeze has done 65000 miles, its a 99, 2 litre model, so is 9 years old. Thanks guys As a matter of interest i am nuts about American cars, the breeze is used daily, but i also have a 2008 Mustang GT, for show use
