Can a 2007 Nissan (4.0 L v 6) with a 5000 lb. towing capacity safely tow a trailer that is 20'4'' long and weighs 3498 lb.????? I really need to know before I go out and purchase a new camper for family vacations.

I have a 2003 Nissan Xterra with the 3.3 engine and am towing

a Jayco Jay Feather Sport 199 which comes in at around 3500 Lbs

dry weight and registered at 21 feet. We went from RI to the Pocono's then to Lancaster, PA and back. On slightly hilly roads like in PA no problems but when going up some of those massive hills in the Pocono's the 3.3 was struggling. Other than that it is fine. I think the real key to towing with this much weight is that I have Weight Distribution itch with and anti-sway bar. It makes all the diferrence in the world. A few times when I was moving it around the yard I used my regular hitch I noticed a big diferrence in the amout of weight was placed in the rear of the Xterra and how it handled. I had NO problems with trailer trucks passing and I atribute this to the hits abd anti-sway bar. One time I forgot to tighten the anti-sway bar and noticed it right away when I got on the hightway. I'd NEVER tow without it. Needless to say I also have electric brakes on the trailer and a brake controller. Took a little getting used to at first but now works fine.

I know if I make any longer trips I'll have to upgrade to the 4 litre V6 which has almost 100 HP more and more torque.

I have a 2009 4 litre V6 Xterra and looked at the 2010 Jayco 199

online. It has a dry weight of 3, 650 lbs and the GVWR is 4, 750 lbs. I believe, from what I read online, that the GVWR is the true weight we need to go by when figuring out what we can pull. You were smart to get the sway bar and the weight distribution hitch. I am trying to learn what kind of sway bar and W.D. hitch I need to pull the Jayco safely. The dealers will sell anything, they lie a lot, from what I read online. That is why I have not bought a trailer after a long time looking. There seems to be so many things we need to know that most dealers won't tell you. They just want to sell you the most that they can.
