Cannot Shift

I have a 2005 Nissan Sentra and the shifter will not shift into gear. It was working fine until my daughter went to get gas and when she went to shift into gear, she could not move the shifter. A tow truck driver assisted in opening a tab on the shifter and by pressing what eems to be an override button, he was able to get the shifter to work. What is causing the shifter to lock?
