2003 pathfinder noise in front end

I have a 2003 and it only has 12, 000 miles on it. There is a thumping sound in the front end and we took off both wheels and worked all parts of the suspension looking for it. It only occurs when going over bumpy roads, originally, but I can now hear it on black top roads. My mechanic thinks it is the rack. After only 12, 000 miles I have a hard time with this, but it is the only loose part we have been able to find. When the engine is off and the wheel is shocked back and forth you can hear a whack..whack as the wheel is push/pulled. Anyone out there had anything remotely similar. Car is always garaged and even though our roads are not real good we have never beat her up. Thanks, chuck.
