Nissan-Altima -
Service engine soon

Virginia Wolbach (70.20.131.89) - Thu Jul 19 16:04:10 2007

I have a 2000 Nissan Altima. It is now displaying a light that says service engine soon. Why is that? I get the oil and fluids changed regularly.

I HAVE SQEAKY WHEEL COVERS HOW DO I ELIMINATE THE SQEAKS

Reply #2 j. adams (156.63.195.2) - Tue Jul 15 08:09:01 2008

For the service engine girl: My service engine soon light has been on twice. The first time it was simply a loose gas cap. If you've recently gotten fuel...or even if not...take your gas cap off and put it back on making sure it's on tightly and you get a few clicks. That might do it. The second time it came on was this morning...and I'm still in the process of getting to the bottom of it.

For the squeaky wheel cover guy: I had the same issue. I took off each wheel cover and ran a bead of silicone around the inside rim where the cover contacts the wheel. After the silicone dried I put the covers back on and the squeaks have all magically disappeared. Be careful, obviously, that the silcone is dried first before you put the covers back on.

I bought a used 2000 Altima with 90, 000 miles on it and it ran fine and it still does with 93, 000, but about two weeks ago the Service Engine Soon light came on. The manual said that the gas cap being loose could cause that so I made sure that the cap was tight but the light would not go out. I recalled that one time my 1993 Jeep Cherokee failed the emissions test and was told that I needed a new gas cap in order to pass so I went and got a new one for about $9 and I passed. So I got a new one for the Altima. No luck. It stayed on. But one day about two weeks later, for no apparent reason it did not come on. Cool! Must have been the gas cap, but the car needed to be driven awhile. I only drive 3 miles to work, so it took numerous trips is my guess. I got my fingers crossed that that was all it was.

Now that I think about it, a mechanic said that if you drive the Altima ( or any car for that matter ) on lots of very short trips, like me going 3 miles to work every day and not much else, the S.E.S. light could come on( not good for the emissions system). So try a new gas cap and take that baby out for a nice ride. I'm in Chicago so there's plenty of expressways. I just didn't know what to do! And by the way, the technique with the turning of the key and pressing the gas pedal 5 time and counting and all that to get the light to go out don't work.

"Service Engine Soon" light on.

I have a 2001 Altima. I bought it used with 101K miles. After about a month of my purchase, the light came on. Since then it's goes on and off every so often. I don't think the short drive will cause it. If the problem is intermittent (on then off), it's because it resets based on the number of times the ignition is turned to start the car. Trust me, if you have an issue with the car, it'll eventually come back on again.

Now....I also have a squeaky hubcap, tried swapping it out and it work for a little while. Now the other wheel is loud and squeaky! Based on the suggestion of silicone bead, sounds like a good idea and will try it soon. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Hello. I own a 2005 Nissan Altima 2.5 - 4 cyl sedan. I bought it new in 2005. I took it in for its #0K miles service in Sept. 2008. Now as I approach 36900 miles, I have a "take car in for Service soon" warning showing up.

Does anyone know if that is triggered by the (standard) 36, 000 warranty ending notice? Or is there something else going on?

Thanks

we have an ALTIMA 2.5 2005 and lately we have to let it heat up for up to 30 min. in order for it not to jump( it goes like a lil jump backwards then forward) then the car stars driving normal. after that we started feeling something hitting from where the gas petal is at when we are in the highway only. this morning i put the car on reverse and put it on drive and the car kept moving slowly backwards instead of forward so i put it on park and put it on drive again and the wouldnt move at all so i was stuck in the middle of the street after 10 min the car decided to move fwd. i went to go check on it again and its going backwards when its on drive instead of forward...help....email me if you know what this is...

Anyone can check the codes in thier nissans.

1.Turn the ignition key to the on position for exactly three seconds

2.Push the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and release 5 times within 5 seconds.

3.Wait EXACTLY seven seconds

4.Push the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and hold for ten seconds. At this point the SES light should start flashing the error codes that are stored in the system and you can release the pedal. If you only get five slow flashes or no flashes at all, then your timing was off on one of the above steps and you should start over.

5.Now to clear the codes, push the pedal back down all the way to the floor and hold for at least ten seconds. The light will continue to flash and there's no indication that the codes have been cleared so make sure you time ten seconds or more.

When the ses starts flashing you count the number of flashes. 1-10 10 being 0. There will be a 4 diget code. The first flashs are about .5 of a sec the next three are like .3 sec.

I have a 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5. Had a lot of problems lately with the engine light coming on. Finally the dealer put in a brand new engine gratis!!!! Still don't understand why, but it didn't cost me anything and I've got a brand new engine...

I have a 2000 Nissan Altima GXE. All the dashboard controls - speedometer, gas gauge, etc. and odometer started 'freezing up' while the car was being driven, sometime in 2004, but otherwise the car operates perfectly. By freezing up I mean the odometer screen goes blank, and the other controls just stop working. Usually they come back on when the car starts after being stopped for a while, but not always. Occasionally they come back on while the car is being driven, but usually they don't.

I first took the car to the dealership, where they didn't find anything wrong with it. I next took it to a mechanic who kept it overnight and couldn't find anything wrong, but fiddled with some wires just in case, but that didn't work either. A couple of years ago the check engine light soon came on while I was driving from Orlando to Atlanta. I took the car to a shop where they got rid of the check engine light, but I didn't mention the freezing to them, and the problem persisted.

About a month ago the check engine light came on again. I took the car to a mechanic a few days ago. The mechanic knows about the freezing, but hasn't yet come up with an answer. Does anybody know what would cause the speedometer, gas gauge and so on to stop working while the car is being driven?

I have a 2005 Nissan Altima that has 23, 000 miles on it. last June, 1 month before my 3 yr or 30, 000 mile warranty was up the check engine light came on. The dealer said it was a faulty sensor and said he replaced it. When I left the dealer the light was off. A month later after my warranty was up the light went on again. I took the car back to the dealer and they told me it was another faulty sensor and it would cost me $400 dollars to replace. Needless to say I was pissed. At the time my car had less than 20, 000 miles on it. Does'nt anyone think this is a manufacturing issue with these sensors? Why hasnt there been a recall? Why should I be spending that kind of money on a car I am still paying for and has such low mileage...HELP!!!

Hey Donna,

Your dealership mis-diagnosed the problem. I'd try to contact the service manager and supply receipts to fight your cause. Show him/her, when you brought the car in and what you had done.

I bought recently a Nissan ALTIMA 2.5SL 2008 WITH 1900 MILES ON IT KNOW HAS 4500 MILES: AND ASS SOON AS I TOOK THE HIGHWAY THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT GOES ON AND STAYS ON.

THE MECHANIC AT THE DEALER RESET IT FOR ME; BUT THREE DAYS LATER AFTER ONE HOUR THAT I ENTER THE HYWAY THE LIGHT COMES ON AGAIN AND STAYS ON

THE MECHANIC REST IT AGAIN AND TOLD ME THAT THE FUEL PUMP HAS NO PRESSURE AND THAT THE MIXTURE WAS LEAN, THE PUMP WAS REPLACED; BUT WHEN I DROVE THE CAR FOR ONE OUR IN THE HYWAY THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AN IS ON.

I DECIDED TO CHECK FOR GAS CONSUMPTION AND IT IS GIVING ME 14.5 MILES PER GALON ON THE HY WAY, 19.8 MILES ON THE CITY.

COULD ANY ONE TELL ME WHAT TO DO?

REGARDS,

ALFREDO

It read emmisions at my Mechanics. First time was after I just went for a gas fill at a station where they do it. I went again to the same place after my mechanic reset it and sure enough it came on again!! He thinks there is some issue but I requested he reset it and I will get gas and do it myself and let you all know.

I reset my service engine light by removing my negative battery cable for about 5 minutes and then reconnect it.

@ times it was when I got gas, the 3rd I drove and stopped car, drove and stopped car? Don't know if that caused it but I didn't get gas and message again. They thought it was gas tank. I had to replace the Manifold Flex Pipe. That light best not come on again.

Hello I have 2005 nissan altima that I just purchased and boy o boy do i wish i did my research. My check engine soon light came on two weeks after purchasing it. I found out that it was the oxygen sensor with was 98.00 dollars at auto zone. They light has been reset however, i do not know if the problem has been fixed because the altima has two sensors and I am not sure that the other one needed to be replace or not

We have a 06 Nissan Altima, after filling up we were three miles outside of Cheyenne and the SES Service Engine Soon light came on, the car was sluggish so we checked the manual, removed the gas cap and put back on tightly. The SES light stayed on.

We drove the car back home and left it for 6 days the light was off for one day and is now back on. Went to Auto Zone and they hooked it up to check the codes, from the codes the man at Auto Zone said my car should not be running. He thinks it reset when we disconnected the battery but cannot reset the SES. The light is still on but we have not had any problems with the car. The warranty was up in June, Nissan dealership will not reset my car, they want to charge me $125 to hook it up to their machine. From looking at other owners problems this seems to be very common after the warranty is up. I need advice on do I pay the dealership or see what happens in the next week.

i bought a 2002 nissan altima 2.5s manual, when i bought it, the km was 149000, and everything works fine, but next day when i drive it from vancouver to prince george, the SES light on when i 'm on the high way, i don't know what's going on, and after i back to prince george, i did the oil chnage, and seems there is no oil leaking or oil burning . and also the engine seems work fine cuz there is no really much noisy .and now the SES light is still on.
