Nissan-Altima - Battery/Starting Problems

Once in a while I am having problems starting my 2005 Nissan Altima. When the problem happens I get in the car and nothing will turn on. To get the car to start I have to open up the hood and pull on the battery cable that has fuses attached to it. This doesnt happen every day.

I also have been having starting problems with my 2000 Nissan Altima for the past 4 years now. I've tried changing the battery at least twice already, and the problem just never went away. I'm about to go get another battery with in the next few days. Is this a known problem with Nissan vehicles?

I have a 2007 Nissan Altima and it wont start all of a sudden. I think its the battery, but shouldn't the battery last longer I have had the car band new since June 2007.

My 1993 is having the same problems. It is because of the positive battery terminal, it is all corroded (if your battery terminal isn't corroded, you should tighten it, you'd be surprised that a loose terminal can cause your car not to start). I removed the terminal to clean it, but now the connection is so poor the car wont start at all (other electronics work though). I found that it is not a standard battery terminal you can buy at an auto parts store, I think it has to be purchased from a dealer.

I have 2005 nissan altima and right now my car wont start. They said its my battery , i have charged my battery but after 3 weeks it wont start again... I used the jumper and my car started again, but when i was going to start again it wont start. So i guess i have to change the battery. I just dont know why the battery dies too early. i thought battery last for 5 - 7 years. I just hate paying labor they charge too much.

I have a 1999 Nissaan Altima with a 2.4 engine 4 cylinders. There are 16 valves on the head. Does that mean it would take more battery power to start that engine than ordinary engines with less valves?I used the same battery to start a 1989 8 cylinder van but when I tried to start the Altima with that battery the engine hardly turn over. I had to use a booster to get started. Once started the engine runs OK. Thank you for responding.

I have an '06 Nissan Altima, and I'm also experiencing a battery cable problem. My car hesitates to start and particularly in cold weather. There appears to be a pattern here with these Altimas.

I am also experiencing a problem when starting my car. I noticed that it hesitates to start. I took it to the dealer and they said it was the battery. My warranty wouldn't cover it because I have driven it over 36, 000 miles(apparently most Nissan's Warranty expire around that time, so beware.)The cost for a new battery at the dealer was around $149 + Labor. I was completely unaware that this is a common problem. I purchased a battery and had it installed recently--I am still having similar issues.

I drive a 2007 Altima ... been 1.5 years and touch wood no problems to date. I seem to have the same problem right after it got back from its 20, 000km service. It now hesitates to start. Pissig me off.At first I thought it was the battery but I've been doing some googling and now I'm pissed off. It could be a wide range of reasons. Anyone got this completely fixed?

i am having cold start problems with my 2003 2.5s altima also. i thought it was battery and got that changed. couple days later i had the same problem. the only way i get the car to start is giving it gas while turning it over.(this is bull because the car is fuel injected)...then all the white smoke comes out the exhaust...so what i did today was get my fluids checked and changed my oil to synthetic...i also filled my tank up and added gasline anti-freeze which absorbs moisture....o and NEVER GET YOUR BATTERY CHANGED AT A FU*KING NISSAN DEALER...PLEASE PURCHASE A DECENT BATTERY THAT WILL COST YOU NO MORE THAN $80 DOLLARS AND INSTALL IT YOURSELF...PLUS YOU CAN GET MONEY FOR RECYCLING YOUR OLD BATTERY(SUMTHING THE DEALER DOES NOT GIVE YOU WHEN YOU PAY $150 FOR A BATTERY CHANGE)

I drive a 2006 Nissan Altima. I purchased the car in March 0f 2006, in December of 2007 was the first time my car would not start due to cold weather.December and January of 2008/2009 my Nissan Altima that is plugged in, would not start due to cold weather. I look out my front window to see cars on the street not plugged in starting, unreal! I did a bit of research to only discover that the Nissan Altimas are not starting, I purchased a battery a few weeks ago thinking it was the battery.

what is the problem with the start? does it just take time to kick over?(that is the problem i am having with my 01 altima) i just back off the ignition and try again holding the key in the start position for a longer period of time or till the car starts. usually if the battery id dead the horn will not work that goes for any of the electrical. could be the ignition cylinder that has to be changes. but because it is electrical it could be any host of problems. hope that is some help.

I JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2005 NISSAN ALTIMA SL AND IT ONLY HAS A LITTLE OVER 25K ON IT. BUT JUST LIKE THE REST OF THE COMPLAINTS I'M HEARING, I'M HAVING STARTER PROBLEMS ALSO. EVERYTIME I LEAVE MY CAR AND COME BACK TO START IT, IT CRANKS AT LEAST 7-8 TIMES BEFORE IT STARTS. I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ME THAT WAS THAT WAS TRIPPIN OUT. NOW I'M WORRIED! NONE OF THIS WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION ABOUT RECALLS OR STARTER PROBLEMS WITH THESE NISSANS. I'VE ALWAYS UP UNTIL ONLY NOW HAVE DRIVEN HONDAS AND TOYOTAS. I'M VERY ANGRY AND UPSET WITH NISSAN AND THE DEALERSHIPS THAT ALLOW SUCH POOR QUALITY PRODUCT TO GET IN THE HANDS OF PEOPLE WHO WORK HARD JUST TO GET A CAR TO GO TO WORK. NOW I HAVE TO CONFRONT THE DEALERHSIP ABOUT THIS ISSUE.

I have a 2007 Altima with about 17K miles on it. I've been having problems with my battery for the past couple of months. The car worked fine when I drove it everyday to work. Now, it's been sitting for days at a time. I've had to have the battery jumped twice so far. I had the car checked at the dealer once and they said nothing was wrong. I'm going to take it back in this week. based upoon this forum, I see the problem is widespread. The dealer service department told me the car has to be driven every week. if it sits more than a week, the computers in the car drain the battery. so after a period of time, the car automatically shuts off the battery. he made it sound like this was all new cars, however, my friend as a 2007 accord. she has had no problem and her care sat for 8 weeks while she was out of town.

If the car sits for 8 weeks, it's understandable that a battery will lose charge. If the car sits for 3 days, it is NOT understandable that the battery will lose charge. My 2007 Nissan SENTRA has the exact same problem. I come out this morning after it has sat for 4 days and it simply won't start. No lights, no electronics, nothing. It seems to be due to the colder weather. Something in these cars is discharging the battery heavily over a short period of time and Nissan needs to figure out what it is.

I am a mechanic and have been dealing with these no start issues for years. #1 problem is that Nissans have always had a (+)batt terminal end that tends to corrode over time, since it also has plug ins, and some have fuses, you can often clean the thing up with baking soda. This applies to practically all Nissans, not just altima. #2 the original batteries are not that good. #3 starters going out is a common problem. #4 the newer ones that have the "push button" start. have a problem with the brake switch. So if your brake lights do not come on, then try unplug & plug in brake switch. Their are 2-switches on brake pedal-try both, and wiggle on shifter to make sure firmly in park.

05 Altima 2.5 with 68K miles. Drove to work on Thursday. No problems or any issues up until then. Got in it to leave and it would not start. Heard a 'clicking' noise for a little while coming from the dash. Would not take a jump. Took it to the dealer because we THOUGHT our extended gold NISSAN SECURITY PLUS warranty would cover pretty much anything wrong other than typical maintenance stuff. WRONG! Battery cables are CORRODED which somehow fried the battery. NOT COVERED. Weren't given a reason. Will fight it..just need the car back. HOW can battery cables corrode that quickly on these cars?! I've driven many other cars in the same type of climate/weather for many years with absolutely no problem with corrosion.

i have a 2005 altima SER i had it for a year now & around February on this year 2009 i started having problems starting the car in the morning i thought it was the battery i went sears they told me the battery was good, for two days the car was fine then it happened again so i said let me get a new battery (die hard)gold 3 years warranty the car was good again for about 4 days then the problem stated again so i went the the mechanic he said lets test the alternator so the alternator was not given full power it suppose to give 14amps to the battery it was only given 12 amps or less so i replace the alternator with a rebuilt one from the nissan dealer(not a Auto part) the car was fine for a week then the problem started again when back to my mechanic the alternator again went to the dealer exchange it for another one, put it on the car was fine again for one & a half week today 5/22/09 i went to start my car & it would not start i really don't know what to do now if anybody has any ideas im open to suggestions.

My 07 Nissan Altima has been having problems with starting. At first when it didn't start I thought maybe I needed a new battery. I bought a new one then it still didn't start. I took it to a mechanic and he said that it could be the terminals maybe. He did something to it and it started to work. That was about 3 months ago. Now my altima is doing the exact same thing again but worse. Now it doesn't hesitate to even start. What do I do?????

I have a 2005 Altima V6. Good car all around, but have a few problems. Replaced the alternator yesterday, it'a a pain in the rear to do. The front rotors warp really easily and have had to replace several times. Have not a had a starting problem, but have replaced the battery. A thermostat also, after some problems with the heater not working, while at stop lights, etc. Everything else has worked without a problem.

Having similar issues. got the brake light and battery light come on. Parked the car and could not start it again. Got AA to test the battery, it was dead and the guy said it was the alternator. Had that checked at AutoZone and it is in perfect working condition (checked twice!). I did notice the battery terminals have some pink corrosion, so maybe thats it. Sounds like this is an altima issue all around. Did have the car die on me after no use for 3-4 days. And a jump start always seems to do it for a couple months. Pretty annoying since FL weather makes for great corrosion.

My 2008 Altima won't start. It 1st started when it was cold... and then it did it when it was just slightly raining. For the past week, it's taken several tries to crank it (push button start). And, this morning, nothing. Had it towed to the mechanic & as Michael's Reply #18 said... we were told it's the Brake Switch. Having no luck finding one. Said we can't get it til next week & we're supposed to be leaving for vacation in the morning. But, my boyfriend said that the mechanic showed him a way to get around it. I assume it won't crank b/c it's not registering either in park or that you're pushing the break??? Not sure.

I have 2007 Nissan Altima that we purchased brand new. Has only 20000 miles. Lately it chooses when it wants to start. Thought it was the battery and had it tested. Was told battery was bad and purchased a new one to the tune of $102.00. Guess what? Still doing the same thing. It takes multiple pushes on the button to get it to crank. Called the Nissan service depart where I purchased the car and was told it sounds like a bad brake switch and to bring it in. Going there with it tomorrow. Just had it there last week because "service engine soon" light came on and told them about it not starting and have to purchase a new battery for it and never once was told that they are having this type of problems with these cars. After this trip, if it continues, I will call Nissan Corp. and then maybe a lawyer depending on the outcome.

This is an update. Picked up my 2008 Nissan Altima last night & the guy told me what to do til he can replace the part. At night, this is easy, but in the daytime, harder to tell. Stand outside your car (but where you can still reach in with your foot & touch the brake)& make sure you can see your brake lights. As long as they're on, you can crank your car. This worked, it took a couple of tries, but as soon as the brake lights came on, the car cranked just fine. There are also some switches right above the brake pedal - check those connections if the previous step doesn't work for you. YES! Nissan does need to do something about this issue... both this issue & the Brake dust issue that causes all the brake noise. I hate this car!

Oh, yeah... forgot to mention this... The mechanic also told me that some cars that are having this trouble are maxing out at 30 mph.. lol. But, it's scary to know your brake lights are going out w/out any warning in the dash. Guess we will have fun explaining that one to the Police Officer that pulls us over.

I have a 03 Altima 2.5 with 120k on it. Recently the car is idling rough on a cold start after the car sat for a day or so (not started). It idles rough for a minute, smoke from tail pipe and check engine light eventually blinks. But after a minute or two the problem goes away and drives perfectly. Its time to change the plugs for the second time but I have doubts that the plugs are the issue. If anyone has experienced this problem and knows the fix I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Tony. I recently fixed a rattle in the drivers door when the glass is down so if anyone needs help with that fix, I can help. It's really easy and I will help over the phone or interent.

I have a '02 Altima, 66k miles on it. Drove for 5 years without running every day (mostly weekends) with no battery issue. Now I bring it to the dealer recently to fix the AC, and a few days later battery is dead. When I had brought it to the dealer for the AC they tested the battery and told me it was fine. Now they said I needed a new battery, since AAA guy said the same I shelled for the dealer battery because I was too stressed and after a few days the new battery is dead. Any idea what can be causing this? Was it related to the AC work? Anyone know whether leaving the doors closed but not flush will leave cabin lights on? Thanks.

I have a 2006 Altima, 33K miles. This was supposed to be a step up from the Sentra (which served me very well for 11 years). Not only do the brakes on my Altima suck, but the battery just died on me yesterday. I've had it wth Nissan's service; they give a diagnosis that does not fix the problem and then they wonder why you don't trust them when they change their mind about what the problem really is, all the while trying to charge you a million dollars. The service manager even recommended that I put after-market brake pads on with the car still under warranty! How's that for standing by your products? I'm never buying another Nissan.

Reply #38 Cindy (66.83.92.154) - Mon Jul 20 14:57:04 2009
Rosa, I would have the battery tested, but it could be the brake switch problem with your car. You have to press the brake to start the car & if the switch is bad, then your car doesn't know you're pressing the brake... so it won't start. I just had mine towed a couple weeks ago for the same problem. And, I have since had the switch replaced - car starts fine now. Good luck!

Well, myself and two of my colleagues bought Nissan Altima 2.5S in April, 2008. One of my colleagues car started developing starting problem in Oct 2008 and the dealer had to change the battery. The car had only done 7000 Km. In June 2009, my car had starting problem and I had to change the battery and now today even the third car had similar problem and we've to change the battery. This seems to be manufacturing defect from Nissan for Altima and they should rectify all vehicles free of cost. Nissan uses absolutely useless batteries. I thought it would be have been better if I had replaced the battery in some garage. Nissan dealer has put some Thunder bird battery after promising me AC Delco. Then he said AC Delco is not fitting in battery space alloted in Altima. Cheaters.

Be careful waiting on the starting problems. The 2.4L altimas have issues with head gaskets leaking. Mine would not start at 75K miles and coolant was leaking into two cylinders. I took it in quickly and there was no additional damage but if you wait it can do a lot of damage. Also these cars have a problem with the catalytic converter ceramic eroding and being sucked back into the engine causing cylinder wear. I had mine replaced also. $1800 for all work - not at the dealer.

My 2007 Xterra wouldn't turn over today and my sister who has a 2007 Armada had the same issue last month. She had to replace her battery and I'm going to have to go out and do the same it appears. I have a 2006 Nissan Altima that I bought new in 2006. I went out today in 70 degree weather and my car didn't start. It wasn't the cold or corrosion. I drove it 25 mins to work and went downstairs two hours later to see if it'll start and it didn't. I'm going to the shope today to find out what's wrong with the car, but I guarantee Nissan won't see a penny of the money I have to put out to get that car fixed.

This problem has started for me. A friend and I have narrowed of down to a fuse or switch thy connects the stearing wheel to the breaks. It seems like when it won't start you have to ply with the fuse and it starts, but then once your driving the break lights won't work. I called my local nissan dealership and they play dumb like they don't know what the problem could be. I also checked if there is a recall on this and nothing yet. If it's the breK switch that needs to be replaced they said it's $500. I can tell you this though, this car is only 2 yrs old but it will be the last Nissan I ever get.

I found my 2007 Altima dead and assumed it was the battery, when I charged it I noticed the positive terminal was very loose. But I could not tighten it. It is a very thin copper connector. Tried to repair it with a bolt and washer, and it started fine, but today no luck. Going to go get a new positive terminal end and see if that fixes the issue. Looks very cheap.

Brake switch for $500? The guy charged me $50 to put it in. I bought the part at Carquest got the family discount.. I don't think the part cost me but maybe $40. I didn't take my car to the dealer. So, I'm sure you can find someone to do it a lot cheaper. Since I've had my brake switch replaced, it's been 2 months with no starting issues. I still hate my car though... and I tell everyone all the problems it's had since I bought it. This Nissan has been a nightmare to own! Has anyone had a problem with their glovebox too?

I have a 98 altima with issues with my battery. I'm going to look into replacing the negative terminal. The positive terminal is good and tight, but the negative/ground terminal won't stay tight. I replaced the alternator about a year and a half ago with similar issues. That worked until a few days ago. We'll see...

I also have an '05 Altima with repeat electrical/starter issues. It began last year with a rattle when I started the car. Then the battery died (awfully prematurely) and I replaced it out of pocket. The rattle worsened and the dealer said it was the alternator and replaced it. They would have replaced the battery as well due to the issue being the alternator, but I'd already paid for it. Oh well. Now the car is only at about 70K miles and the exact same thing is happening again. The battery cables develop more corrosion than I've ever seen in a car in my whole life (including an antique truck I once owned) and another battery is dying. The car is becoming increasingly unreliable about starting which worries me as I'm always accompanied by our toddler and don't want to be stranded on the side of the road with him. Does anyone know if there is any "official" documentation out there about this recurring problem? Owners need something in hand when going to the dealers so we're not repeatedly stuck paying insane repair rates for defective Nissan parts and vehicles.

My 2007 Altima 3.5 SE is also having problems with hesitating to start. The dealer can't get it to duplicate fully for them but has heard a slight hestitation when I made them start the car with me...I was told the hesitation is normal. I do NOT believe this is to be considered normal as if it was normal it would have done this from day one and it just started around 30k miles. I truly hate this car as it has already had 2 brake switches replaced and if that is the problem then I am unsure where to go from here...also Nissan has refused to buy my car back even with the 30 warranty repairs including the 2 new brake switches.

Me Too.. I'm now on my third battery in three years. After the car sits undriven for a day or two the car won't start. Findings: 1. There's usaully one dry battery cell. Can't even jump car until I refill cell with water and then charge for a few hours. 2. Alturnater test ok 3. battery test ok 4. Nissan doesn't have clue what the problem is. 5. It's a serious drain on the battery when parked. THANK GOD THIS LEASE IS UP IN FOUR MONTHS........

46, 935 miles and it's a 2003. I went outside and my car would not start. Wow that was hurtful ...but I am grateful for this website because now I think I have diagnosed the problem before the dealer breaks my pockets. I popped the hood and wiggled the cords on the battery and it started. Throughout the day I had to wiggle the cords in order for my car to start. My roommate even tried to tighten the - and + that is connected to the battery and it would not stay tighten. Tomorrow I will take it in to be fixed.

I brought my 2007 Altima brand new as well... A few months ago, the car won't start and when jump, it start fine. I brought a new battery at Costco, pick out the highest cranking power for this type of class car (525A)... Didn't have a problem for about 2 months, now it started all over again. Sometime it start, sometime it doesn't... I will check the suggestion you all made here and report back. I called the dealer about the warranty but haven't heard back from them yet... so we will see...

My wife and I just experienced this. It has something to do with the "chip" in your Nissan key. You should contact your dealer for a new key, this hsould help your problem. We were told this by a Lexus owner. Same problem. I looked it up in the owner's manual, page 5-5 really explains this better. There are a few more pages but...

I have a problem with my 2000 nissan altima. the battery is getting drained even after charging it. it also looses power and stalls while driving it. luckily I was close to home when this happened. it acts like a bad alternator, but I had both the battery and alternator tested and they both tested fine. any ideas on what this could be? please help.

Cindy, thanks for posting all your problems about your car. I have a 08 altima too. Just started having random starting issues. I have always had the loud brake noise and brake dust, but this is crazy. Just starts when it wants too?I am so disappointed. I spent a lot money to have a piece of crap! My Honda was much kinder to me. Nissan never again!

2008 Nissan AltimaBought it brand new and after only nine months the battery was completed drained. I had to have it towed to the dealership where they told me that I must have left something on. Two months later same battery dead. I was told I must have left something on. So Wednesday I'm driving on the highway and one of my rear tires blow. After AAA changes it I go to start my car and the battery is dead!!! AAA looked at the battery and it looked like a science experiment with large amounts of white corrosion! Spent two hours at dealership yesterday and they told me that I haven't been keeping up with cleaning the battery terminals that is listed in my service log!!! I told the service manager that I would not pay to have them cleaned. Still have same battery they have never replaced it. They think that there was something in the steering wheel that was consistently draining the battery. (Everytime I turned down the radio volume on steering wheel my horn would beep! - There's a clue!) As for the defective tire that has been since the car was 4 months old I have to deal with Bridgestone! REALLY unhappy with Nissan!!! Anyone else have battery or defective tire issues like I have?

I have a '95 Altima, with a rebuilt engine. I am on my third alternator in three years. Have not determined what is continuing to burn these up, but this seems to be a problem others are having as well...

I have an 08 altima with the same battery problems. The battery went dead in feb of this year and i had it checked they said it was bad so i replaced it. Then a couple of months ago it started getting sluggish until i finally got stranded but a jump start got it going right away and since then it had been fine. Until a week ago when i noticed it was getting slower to start again and once again got left stranded. Took it to the the dealer and so far they havnt found anything wrong with it. Its so frustrating right now i have a rental car. I wish nissan would figure out the problem. If they dont im going to keep having it towed to the dealer till i can lemon law it.
