i just got this car from my parents a couple of months ago when im heading back home and after like 400mi i stoped at a stop sign and it just died, a cop told me it was the silinoid in the alternator so i replaced that and then found out that the alternator does not have a silinoid in itthere was a clicking sound when i tryed to start it agian i had a friend give me a jump it started rite up so i tryed driving home and it died agian so about 5 jumps later i got it home so then i fixed the starter and tried driving it agian to see if that was what was shorting out the car but it did the same thing about 1 1/2 miles later so now im hopefully asking the rite people about what could be wrong thanks please get back to me

Hello . The first thing you need to do is charge the battery fully , next you need to test the alternators out put . To do this you will need a volt meter .First measure the battery voltage with the engine shut off ( wait 15 min after charging the batt ) you should see about 12.6 - 13 volts ,next start the engine and measure the voltage at the battery The voltage now should be around 13.5 - 15.5 volts if the volts are lower with the second reading then the alt is not working . Next you will need to check that all the contections are clean , and there is no broken wires at the alternator and the battery Geoff .

if you are getting fuel and spark but still no answer try a compression test. compression is also essential for the engine to run you basicly need all four things to make this engine run. you need the correct timing , spark at the right time, fuel at the right time. and you also need the right compression. if all other tests that you have preformed are good until this point then for now the next option would be to compression test. check the specs on that engine in order to preform the right test.

Eric, I had a 81 280 zx for 10 years and 300, 000 miles. During that time I had a similar problem. Mine turned out to be the computer module located under the drivers side left kick panel. It is a silver "Brain box" for the car. I replaced mine and had no further problems.

about the clutch sticking to the floor, is the master cylinder good in the car for the clutch? is the clutch bleed out? i would try those things if you haven't i just replaced my clutch and had that problem found out i had to replace the rubber hose that goes to the slave cylinder. good luck!
