Dealer tells me that I have to pull stereo out to see the serial number. Then he can use the serial number to look up the code for me.

If you are original car owner, the code would have been on plastic card delivered with the cars paperwork.

Dealer advises to write code under the hood for the next time it happens. Can't hurt to check if someone already wrote it there.

Also, dealer should not be charging for such a small service as looking up a code for you. Talk to the service manager if needed. Good luck!

to see the radio serial number on the montero sport 99 just remove the cup holder by pulling it out, then you will see the sticker with the radio serial. i went to the dealer with the radio serial and vin om the car. i had to pay $30 for them to give me the code 3993. to reset a radio with the "off" display just turn the radio on..leave the "off" display on for 1 hour uninterupted, then it will aumatically shut off. when you turn it back on it will ask for "code". enter the code using numbers 1-4 from the memories, then press CD button.

I had the same problem with my 2000 Montero when I first purchased it. I got advice from my old mechanic and he reccommended for me to call the Mitsubishi Motor Company number found in the back of your owner's manual. They walked me through the process.

Hey guys i just recently had the "code" problem with my 1998 Montero and i found that there should be 2 red cards that have "ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM" written on it. When you find that card there should be your radio code#, model#, & your serial# on it.

Next to enter your code#(these directions are also found in your manual at the end of the radio part)

1. Return the power supply from the battery to the normal condition.

2. place the ignition key in the "ACC" position

3. Press the POWER button, and "codE" will be shown on the display.

4. Press NO.1 through NO.4 memory select buttons to set the four-digit security code indicated on the card. Every time the digit key is pressed, the figure changes as follows:

0-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9

5. Press the TAPE button, and a beep will be heard and the audio system will be at normal condition

This is a very good example of "beating a dead horse".

I too have this problem and it's really lame how there isn't a default code in the manual or something. I think the only sure fire way to solve this problem is to call a Mitsubishi dealership or headquarters and they will look up the code for you. However, there may be a fee involved--but it's better than not having audio at all, I guess.

Hi Just thought I'd share my info- I too have a Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2001 and needed the code after getting a new batt. I called the 1800 # in the owner manual, the lady was really nice, and said that because I had tried too many codes loud beep, I needed to turn the key to the ACC for 90 min to reset so it will say code again. I needed to call her back after I pulled the radio out and got the serial # and model # off, when I called her back she gave me the code no problem. FYI each one has a different code, don't know if they usually charge, but I was really nice to her, and she did not charge me for the info.

hi guys.i also have the same problem.i did change a battery and the same thing happen.however what you do is take your radio out from the dash you will see some numbers on the top.what ever numbers you all see there write them down and call any Mistubishi dealer and give them the numbers.it should help. good luck.

I have had the same problem with needing my radio code. The Mitsubishi dealers will charge you a high price just to give you the code. Call the dealer & ask for service department, tell them you are having satellite radio installed & that the radio reset during installation. Tell them the tech needs the code in order to check & make sure it is working properly. They will give you the code over the phone. Works everytime.

**If your radio says CODE: enter the code they gave you over the phone!

**If your radio says OFF: turn your switch over to ACC mode for 90 minutes and the radio should reset to say CODE.

Quick note: Once you have entered the radio code, press CD and that will turn the radio on. It won't actually turn the CD player on-just AM radio station.

Place the key into "ACC" position for 60 - 90 minutes and the radio will reset to "Code". If you don't have the correct radio code you can get it for free by calling 1-888-MITSU2008. You'll need the owners information, VIN, radio model# and serial# (found on top of the radio).

I just did this a couple days ago when I replaced the battery. It works and it free! Don't bother with the dealer.

I had the same problem. I got the code from Mitsubishi customer care service(1888-mitsu2009) for free. You have to have the radio serial # and part #(start withe MR). Also have the last 4 of your vehicle vin # to allow them to look up your vehicle in their system. My radio works now and it was a quick and easy process,

Yo tube el problema con el codigo del radio para mi Montero Sport 2000 cuando cambie my bateria, yo llame al 888 6487820 de Mitsubishi Motors y una senorita amablemente me atendio y me dio el codigo del radio, yo le proporcione a ella el numero de VIN del vehiculo y el numero de serie del radio.

Ella me dio todas las instrucciones necesarias para solucionar el problema, todo esto fue totalmente gratis, tienen un gran servicio de atencion al cliente y hablan en espanol.

I had a problem with the radio code for my 2000 Montero Sport when replacing my battery, I called at 888 6487820 Mitsubishi Motors and a lady kindly responded to me and gave me the code for the radio, I gave her the VIN number of the vehicle and the serial number of the radio. She gave me all the instructions needed to solve the problem, all this was totally free, they have great customer service and speak in Spanish.

I had a problem with my stereo code. My husband changed the battery and after that it asked for a code. If you call the dealer with no serial number they will charge you. But if you just pull out your cup holder on dash board you can use a flash light and a butter knife or srewdriver to lift up on frame you can see the top of your stereo and the sticker with the serial number should be there.I thought it would so difficult to do this, but it is not. He only ask me for the serial number. But I heard sometimes they ask for the mr # which is located on the top of the stereo on the same sticker as the serial number. By the way I have a 1998 montero sport mistubishi suv. After I got the number I called my local dealer which is in glendale phone number is 818-550-1500. I asked for the service department and told them that my husband changed the battery in the car and now my stereo would not work. I gave him make model year of the car. He asked me for the serial # and then he gave me a code 3437. put the code numbers in then press CD. Here is a number to call that I got off the internet 1-888-648-7820 they might be able to help. By the way www.coderadio.com they charge you a fee. you do not need to pay. I hope you guys do not wait as long as I did. I was without a radio for a long time." you can do it."
