Mercury-Cougar - Trunk does not open using release button or remote

The trunk of my 1999 Cougar does not open when using the button inside the car (bottom left of passenger side) or the alarm remote. It does open manually but I would like to know what could be wrong. Any ideas? Or have you had the same problem?

Sorry, I meant the button on the bottom left of DRIVER side.

Seila, I have the same problem with my 1999 Cougar. I placed probes for a voltmeter on the two wires going to the trunk release solenoid (in the trunk) and when I pressed the button on the remote the meter showed a momentary 12 volts. This tells me the solenoid is not working. I removed the mounting nuts and worked the solenoid around inside the framework and found the problem. The solenoid is made in France!!!! I have not sourced a new solenoid yet. Capt. Runnamok
