Need to replace my ignition and have no clue about how to do it???

My car was stolen about a year ago and the ignition was ripped out and now I start it with a screwdriver. I have talked to a few people and everyone seems to think I have to replace my entire steering wheel unit... I am a young female and have don't know enough about cars to know what to do and have no money to take it in and have it looked at, but I think having to change out the entire steering compartment is a little extreme. Does anyone know if there is something simpler that I can do or have any suggestions? Any info will be appreciated! Thanks.
