Mercury-Capri - Capri dies at 3000 RPM

My 94 SE Capri (1.6L Stick Shift) will not run above 3000 RPM. On the road or in the garage, when the Revs get to 3000 it's like the ignition is switched off. When the Revs drop to about 2700 it fires up again. If I keep my foot on the gas it keeps quitting at 3000, drops to 2700 and fires, revs to 3000 and quits again, drops to 2700 and firs etc. etc. On the road below 3000 RPM it runs fine. Accelerates hard. Idles and runs smoothly. I've done a read of the Engine Management system and there are no codes. Would sure appreciate any advice.

I just bought a Capri and I remember reading in the manual that in the truck under the carpet there is a red button that resets you fuel pump. Most likely isn't it, but it's worth a shot! Check out the manual. Good Luck._bret

YOUR PROBLEM IS IN THE FUEL SYSTEM, BUT ITS NOT NESSISARILY THE FUEL PUMP. IF IT WAS THE PUMP THE CAR WOULDNT RUN, OR WOULD RUN BUT NOT VERY SMOOTHLY. TRY REPLACING THE FUEL FILTER. IF ITS CLOGGEG THEN IT CAN RESTRICT THE FLOW OF FUEL TO THE ENGINE. I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND FIXED IT THIS WAY.

Most vehicles are equipped with software to prevent high rpm damaged, when WOT (wide open throttle), system disable fuel delivery system FDS, as soon as TPS (throat position sensor) readings are bellow WOT, FDS kicks in. A shop manual will tell you if this vehicle is equiped with this system, good luck
