'91 Capri Battery Warning Light

The battery light on the dash of my '91 Mercury Capri lights up frequently, stays on for a minute or two, sometimes less, then turns itself off. The alternator checks out just fine even when the battery light is on. I replaced the battery itself and the light continues its inexplicable behavior. Has anyone else had to deal with this?
