I have a 1983 380sl 300k+ miles, great shape but there seems to be a loud rattle coming from the trunk area going over bumps or gravel roads. exhaust is in place just fine, as well as the bumpers anything else that might come loose. Any ideas?
A rattle at the rear may be caused by the thin Aluminum tubular casing which covers the Gas Level Detector/ Transmitter Unit in the fuel tank to have slipped off.
When this happens the tube cover is rolling about in the tank. The noise is most noticeable when fuel is low or you go over a bump.If this is the case take the top off the car and open the rear panel which covers the Canvas Cover and unscrew the unit then fish around in the tank with a device that will lift it out.If you use a Steel
instrument and cause a spark you are a dead man.
