300e 2.6l, auto, starts to miss fire, tach jumps & stalls

This is the first benz I've owned, love the car, runs and handles great, BUT, {1990} She will stall and start like the ignition shuts down, some times regain and carry on for days or weeks. If it does shut right down, just shifting to Nuetral and restarting she will come alive with out hesitation. The first time this occured we assumed the regular gas instead of premium was cuase. Made every effort to only put premium and we had no troubles for months. Fella I know who works on and only up to 1985 said the idle air motor could be suspect. I put in a bottle of carb cleaner and sprayed the throtle body with carb cleaner. Worked great for weeks. Came home one rainy night, trouble started again>>>>>bad distributor and wires? I just soaked the heck out of the coil, dist. and wires.....runs perferct. Help! Helm

Just a thought in regards to my issue, this sounds like it could be the EGR valve sticking open also. has anybody seen any history on this? The shaft on the valve on the manifold is clean and shinny, I do not suspect it is the cause, what controls the EGR? Thanks in advance, Helm.
