88 grand wagoneer won't shift out of 1st gear???

I have an 88 Grand Wagoneer w/ the 360 and 727(I think) auto tranny. accellerator cable broke and was stuck on full throttle, fixed it but now won't shift out of 1st gear when driving. Any ideas? checked all fittings I can find and fluid level is good. It clicks into each gear at the shifter and the throttle linkage going down to the trans seems to be correctly adjusted. I am thouroughly confused with this one!
