I have a 99 Jeep grand cherokee limited. While I'm driving down the freeway at about 60mpg and I let off the gas to slow down the rmp's will increase over 3 and then fall drastically. it's almost like the transmission is slipping but it gives off quite a jolt. I don't know if a tranny flush will help or if I need an all new transmission. Also if I accelerate very fast it it slips between 1st and 2nd gear but if I accelerate at a normal pace it's fine. Anybody know what's going on?

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, with the 6cyl. engine. My problem is the torque converter. Between 45 & 55 MPH the engine keeps downshifting. when this happens i lose power, RPMs drop. It will do this until I get to the 55 MPH mark.I can feel this shifting under my seat. This does not happen in stop & go driving. It will happen on the highway, every time. i have brought it back to the dealer where we had purchased the vehicle ( used in Nov. 2007 )several times. I have an extended warrenty on the vehicle. So far I have spent about $600.00 on parst that were not covered on the warrenty ( fuel filter, torque converter pump, fluids, gaskets ). Problem still exist. i am being told by the dealer that this is a normal condition on some Jeeps. I will not bring the Jeep back to this dealer. Note: I also have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee, that I purchased from this dealer. no problems out of the ordinary. Is this normal? or do I smell a lemon.

i have a 1995 jeep grand cherokee limited and just recently started having trouble with the tranny. No warning! It was fine one minute, then the next time I went to pull off it was straining to move. Then I started to do it manually starting from 1 and it pulled off just fine, then when I shifted to 2 it would not change gears. Put it in D and it shifted but not into the last gear. RPMs go up to 3 @ 60mph. I have noticed that my overdrive isn't working anymore either. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have a 1999 jgc with 97000 miles on it. 3 months ago I had to replace the speed sensor. Everything worked fine. Now I have the same problem and it's not the sensor. When in drive it shifts at 2000 rpms and only once. It shifts hard. The code comes up for the sensor and/or internal problem. Do I need a new trans?

I'm working on a friends 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lerado with a 4.0 4X4. It will not shift out of 1st gear. He took it to a tranmission shop, and they run some tests on it and told him that the governing pressure switch is bad. they also said that it would be a good idea to just put a new transmission in it. He got a remanufactured trans. through a local parts store and I put it in. Guess what, it still will not shift. I put a new speed sensor in it and it still will not shift. i also played with the relays by moving them around in the fuse box and that didn't do anything. Do you have any idea's????????

I have a 2005 Grand Cherokee Laredo and took it in to the local dealer when the check engine light illuminated. It was also leaking tranny fluid. They "fixed" the problem.

Now, I have a check engine light on again, immediately after leaving the dealership. It's a Transmission Over Temp error code. The tranny shifts fine, the fluid level is good, the fluid is clear with pink tint (no burn smell).

I took it in again to the dealership. Again, they "fixed" the problem by resetting the error code and test driving the vehicle. Evidently, they don't know what they're doing because the light is on again.

Now I can't get them to answer the phone or return my voicemail messages. (Imagine that)

Anyway, can anyone help with this?

I have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee Laredo, 4.0, automatic transmission. Now when you put it into drive and give it gas, it takes about 1500 rpms before the vehicle will start moving. And then there is no power hardly till you reach about 25 mph, and then it drives normally. If I shift it into 1-2 gear manually, then it has the power that it should have. Someone suggested that the transmission vacuum lines could be leaking. What do you think. Is this a common problem? Thank you for any help you give. Chad

I have a 95 grand cherokee, and I'm putting in a 93 tranny. The torque converter on the 93 4.0 dosent match my 95 ring gear. So i'm going to use the 93 ring gear. Now some holes on the 93 ring gear are not the same as the ones on the 95's [not the bolt holes] witch way should I put in the ring gear ? should I match up where the stamped part # is ? should I try to put the holes as close to the original one's as i can ? if it go's in a little off will the vibration be large ? Could it damage the front torque converter seal ? If anyone has done this or knows about it please get back to me. Thanks

Then I started in 1st gear and it would not change. Then I parked it a while and 2nd and 3rd works. After driving a while, only 1st works again. This has continued for about two weeks. Reverse works fine at all times. The O/D light stays on when 1st and 2nd works, but goes off when only 1st gear works. Has 182K miles. Is this the end or is there a posssible solution? My 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cyl 4wd will not shift out of 1st gear until about 3500 rpm. Tranny shop diagnosed the problem as a faulty governing pressure switch and estimated repair costs at $1800 to $2500. Any body have any experience with this problem? repair costs?

My 2004 Grand Cherokee Rocky Mountain edition seems to drive at about 300 RPMs too high when driving 60mph. I just baught the jeep because my girlfriend has awesome luck with her Grand Cherokee Laredo. Her Laredo's RPMs seem perfectly normal and she gets 4MPG better than mine (she gets 21MPG, I get 17MPG)... Is it possible that my gear ratio is lower than her's??? Or could it be a torque converter problem??? I'd appreciate any help! Thanks

I have a 99 grandcherokee ltd., periodically the check engine light comes on and at the same time the tranny stalls untill about 2000 rpm's. A low pressure switch code keeps popping up and the switch had been replaced, but the switch only lasts about 10 mins.It has me stumped and my friends tranny shop as well. I also have abs codes and was wondering if anyone knows how they effect this tranny. Thanks

Hi I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee that is making a funny noise in reverse. First I took to Menike (they saw a woman coming) who charged me $400 for a tuneup, new serpantine belt, filters, wiring etc. It still made the sound so I took it across the way (to the friend of the Menike guy) a tranny shop that quoted me 2600 to replace the transmission with a rebuilt. I don't know what to do? Don't have a lot of cash can either replace or buy a used car with the cash I don't spend on the transmission.

Help a woman in distress in a mechanical world where SOMEmen know more than me.

Thanks guys,

Stella

Hi, I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 150K miles. Was running fine then all of a sudden it lost almost all power from a dead stop...almost as if 1st gear disengaged. Once it shifted into 2nd, it ran fine. The next day, went to take a test drive around the block, 1st gear returned but engine light came on and the shift point changed. it shifted from 1st to 2nd @ around 3200rpm. As the jeep warmed up the shift point returned. Next morning went to take it out only to discover that it won't shift out of 1st gear. I had the parts store hook up a code reader and reset the light...diagnoses was "error output speed sensor signal". Bought a speed sensor and looked in repair manual only to find out that 1999 & later models don't have speed sensors. Any one have any Ideas on what may be the problem(s)and possible fixes or has it reached the end of its road?

Hi, I have a 2000 Jeep Laredo. The Trans Over Temp Light and the Over Drive light keep coming on and off. I took it down to get the fluid changed not too long ago and the fluid is already near black again. Someone said it could be my torq converter...someone else said a clogged filter...anybody experience this problem? It doesn't go on until I'm on the freeway or after driving it about 5 minutes. If I let it rest and turn it off then it will not go on again for a while.

We have changed everything short of the transmission itself and it will still not shift from 1st to 2nd until 3500RPM. We owe so much on it and can not afford a $2500+ repair/replacement. Does anyone know if a class action lawsuit has been assembled yet against chrysler for the faulty equipment? they also have major problems with the caravans. Can anything be done here lawsuit wise?

Let me know!

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited.

Stalls at stop lights as idle slightly jumps and then decreases to nothing.

Doesn't happen all of the time.

Never happened before installing new plugs and replacing transmission fluid.

Auto shop put in Autolite Platinum Plugs which very well could be part of the issue.

I've seen several recommendations including the Torque Converter, throttle position sensor, electrical short, idle air control motor, PCV valve, plugs, etc.

If anyone has the same issue and it's been resolved, please let me know.

Thanks a lot.

I have a 2000 Jeep grand cherokee loredo. I have 145, 000 miles on it and recently it will slip when I make a turn but only when it was just started. The transmission fluid looks good. I am worried my transmission is going bad. Is there anything else it could be and how much if I need one will a new transmission be? It's a 6 cylinder. I don't know much about cars and I'm trying to get some ideas before I let my mechanic check it out. It drives fine on the expressway.

I was wondering if anybody has found the mystery of the multiple Jeeps that will not shift from 1st to second gear. It seems if I let it warm up and than drive it a ways (in 1st gear) and stop and use reverse, back into drive it will shift. It will shift all day until it cools off again??????? 95 Grand Cherokee, 4.0 litre, 70, 000 miles, never towed. Fluid and filter changed and were both CLEAN, no metal at all in the pan. mickman8690@yahoo.com

My Check Engine Light came on (and has stayed on) since I left JiffyLube for an oil change, air filter change, added transmission fluid this morning... I took it back, and the mechanic used the diagnostic tool. It showed nothing wrong. Too coincidental. Anyone know what happened? Thanks in advance for your help.

gm needs to step up and recall their transmissions. We should not be responsible or pay for their mistakes when knowingly they put faulty transmissions in their vehicles. That only last about 50, 000 kms befor having to be replaced or rebuilt.

I have just purchased a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with the 5.7 V-8, Quadra Drive II and 3.73 gears. I am confused as to how the top gears relate to RPMs. With the transmission locked in 4th the tach reads 2000 at 60 mph. When I moved the shift selector out of 4th and into "Drive", where the Jeep should go into overdrive and into torque convertor lockup, I still get 2000 rpm at 60 mph. The shift points are not detectable by feel or sound so I must rely on the tach.

There is something I must not understand.

My 2001 Dodge 1500 also has overdrive and a torque converter lockup. When you watch the tach on the Dodge It's 2000 rpms at 60 mph, then upshifts to overdrive with 1700 rpms at 60 mph then the torque converter lockup drops it to about 1400 rpms at 60 mph.

Can anyone explain the Jeep to me?

I have a 2004 grand laredo cherokee 4x4 6 cyl. that will shift into low gear for no reason and seems to get stuck. Does this mean the transmission is going out in it?

I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with automatic transmission; and it doesn't shift into any gear. What is mostly the cause and how can it be fixed?

Reply #61 Cherie (24.119.11.140) - Mon Apr 20 23:25:07 2009

I had the same problem last week and we took it to our mechanic and it was 2 senors were not working and a u-joint had to be replaced. The also flushed the transmission. He said if the 2 senors are not working then it would cause the jeep to stay in first and make it have a loud rev sound. Now it runs great. However, now the battery won't stay charged...any ideas?

On a 2003 Grand Cherokee 4X4 with 6-cylinder engine, 100, 000 miles: The transmission sounds like there is pump cavitation. It loses drive capability (loses oil pressure?) and makes a sound just like cavitation would make. Usually it is quiet in park, but makes the noise when shifted to a gear. The oil looked a little bad, so I dropped the pan and changed the oil and inlet filter. There was some sludge, some iron and some brass in the pan, but not terrible for 100, 000 miles. It worked perfectly for about a week and now the problem is back. Any ideas? Is there anything about the pump or pressure regulator that can be the problem?

I have a 99 Grand Cherokee Limited edition which has all of a sudden started to give me a really hard time when shifting gears. At first i just noticed it was revving a little high when changing first through third gears, but today it took about 5-7 minutes of driving 40kmh until it finally went into third gear. I didn't think it was going to go into third at all by the end of it i was about to call a tow truck.

Has lots of tranny fluid in it...

Does this sound like i'll need a new tranny or might there be a chance i can get by with changing the filter???]

Any help is really appreciated!!!

TIA,

Josh MacDonald

I have a 1995 jeep grand cherokee limited 8 cylinder white with tan leather interior. bought it last summer and it has 103687 miles on it havent driven it since august. I think there is a problem with the transmission and also the alarm system seem to be draining the battery causing it to need a jump each time before it will start. any recommmendations on how i should go about getting it fixed or is it even worth spending the money to fix. any help is appreciated.

I have a 2000 J.G.C.L. 6cyl. 42RE TRANS. when i had 120k on it the trans decided to go out. Every place i took it said it was electrical. The Dodge dealer i took it to said the P.C.M and the trans was bad. I put a new P.C.M in it and guess what? Didn't fix the problem. Jeep trans with overdive typically burnout. I have to replace the trans. What i found out is when the P.C.M detects a problem in the trans it will go into "Safety Mode" effectivly locking the trans in 3rd gear. it will manually shift but not in auto. This is so you can get it to your mechanic. I just bought a junk trans to get me through till i get a new one. My advise is if you experiece this issue be prepared for a new or rebuilt trans.

Make sure your all using the correct tranny fluid!!!!! Dont just get any atf off the shelf! your tranny can go out within 100 miles if you use the wrong stuff! In all jeep automitic transmissions all the way up to 06 valvoline ATF+4 is recomended and will clear up some of the problems you people are talking obout having fluid in transfer case should be changed every 30, 000 miles and fluid and filter in tranny should be changer every 60, 000 alonge with front and rear end fluids. I hope this helps some of you out. Also in some cases lucas tranny fluid will take care of the problem when the tranny is slipping.

Honestly i have read everyone's issues with there jeep and agree WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO BE RECALLED!!! I have a 2005 Jeep Grand cherokee lerado and honestly i am sick of it. Now and then all my gears get boxes on them. Was told its a trans control something but yet that part was changed last year due to recalled. and guess what its STILL DOING IT!!! and wow now when i back up my jeep likes to act like it is slipping. MPG are bad idk about anyone else but i am lucky if i get 16 -17 high way if i am driving long for like an hour on the high way i may get 18 other than that its like 15 -16. Lets see check engine light came on threw off like ten codes so i take it in to get fixed they said. it was just a censor nothing to do with the transmission or anything. and wow check engine light is back on. I started my jeep today and it smelt like transmission fluid. I am getting sick of this every month it is something else. and i am still paying on the thing. I WOULD NOT recommend it to ANYONE i know!

JEEP NEEDS TO GET OFF THERE OVER PAID BEHINDS AND FIX THESE ISSUES!

hi guys

i have grand cherokee himi 5.7 2008 it is about 20.000 miles i faced a problem with it.

while driving in between speed of 120 to 140 km the car suddenly it makes a very quick and fast brake and release in about less than 1 second. i took it to the agency they told me that it is transmission problem and it needs to be replaced and that was there discribtion "turbine speed in transmission dropping to zero while the out put speed still 1500 rpm"

plzz if any one faced this problem or can ask some one for me that is will a very big favor for me.

thank you

I just bought a 2007 Grand cherokee & have been having a problem w/ the transmission for bout a month now. It doesn't happen everytime I drive, but today it happened twice. I start out driving fine & bout a mile down the road it won't go. It is like it is stuck in between gears. I push the gas & it just hesitates. Help! Am I gonna have to deal w/ this issue for the life of this vehicle? It is going to the dealer tomorrow, hopefully they fix it!

I have a 1999 Grand Cherokee that has 139K miles. I started having shifting problems about a month ago and when I asked my mechanic, he couldnt make it do it nor were there any codes in the computer. Its starting to do it all the time but Im wondering if its going to need a new tranny or could it be something else. The fluid and filter were changed about a yr ago. It is scary to drive as the jolt it makes shifting gears is heart stopping. Can anyone help me figure out what Im dealing with?

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 140K miles. Roaring noice in the left front at 40 miles an hour. Not the engine. Had it in two different shops. One replaced the left front wheel bearing. Took to a tran shop and they could not find anything but did replaced the pinion bearings. They say that the front differential and drive shaft are all OK. Anyone have a clue any helped much appreciated.

I have a 1994 Grand Cherokee I was just driviing it on Monday past and 30 miles it just wouldn't move any more. I pulled over and no gears worked motor running fine. I had it towed and once it was cooled all gears worked only until it warmed up.

Any cheap fix or is this mean I need another tranny.

Thanks

My 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a V8 AWD. I had the trans rebuilt a year ago at a shop that sent it out for someone else to do the work. Now that warranty has expired, the truck will sometimes jerk in 1st gear. Should I go to another shop where the work is done on the premises?

Just sold my Cherokee to buy a Grand Cherokee, i don't know if that was a good plan because no I have transmission problems:

One day it shifts oke and the next day it doesn't go from 1 to 2 or from 2 to 3. and taking my foot of the gas and putting it on again helps not every time. We changed the oil and the filter but that didn't help.

Do you have any solution?
