04 Jeep Grand Cherokee-electrical problem

Jon (67.52.49.226) - Tue Mar 24 10:52:11 2009

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. About 2 weeks ago I noticed that my drivers side door control panel was not working and my interior lights were staying on until I hit the door lock mechanism on my keys. The control panel doesn't work at all; no power window, side mirror, or locks. I took off the panel b/c I read something about possible problems with the wiring from the interior to the panel. I even looked in the rubber boot going from the interior to the door, but all wiring looked good. I'm wondering if there is possible fuses under the hood that could possibly contribute to this problem, and if so which ones. If anyone has any possible solutions, please let me know.

Hey everyone, I am also having the same problem. Wondows, side mirrors door locks, and interior lights do not work. Filled her with gas and then all of a sudden my power would not work. The owerns manual does not state anything regarding fuses, and the electrical. Pulled off the paneling on the inside door all fuses and wires are intact and have power going to them. Believe it is a problem with the master control buttons on the drivers side door. If anyone finds anything more out please do tell.

Have the same issue. I have been told that the hot (12vdc) wire in the harness breaks at the bending point between the door and frame. Harness needs to be disconnected, pulled into drivers compartment and repaired. My local Dealer says approx. 2 hrs/40usd.

You can see the solution here.

I have the same issues, ...and my trunk door seems to be jammed. It wont open no matter what I try, unlocked or locked the thing wont budge. I was thinking that it may also be electrical because now my powerlock doesn't work

I had a similar problem yesterday. I went to start it and...NOTHING. No interior lights, no ignition, no ANYTHING. I sat there for 10 minutes waiting and turning the key with no results. I then went to break it out of gear so I could move it to get a jump and when i grabbed the gear shift and tried to pull (very hard) I saw all my gauges bounce. Weird. Then I tried the key again and everything's fine. Here's the really part. I have my clock and all my pre-sets on my radio still intact. It's as if there was never a problem. I lost nothing in the radio's memory seemingly indicating there was never a loss of power. Anyone understand this one?

Reply #7 Mike (66.67.46.37) - Wed Jul 29 14:02:05 2009

SAME EXACT Issue here Scott. The car seems to be totally fine and then out of nowhere EVERYTHING will stop working. I checked my battery and it was fine. I'm thinking something to do with the ignition switch perhaps!?

Reply #8 Scott (138.162.0.44) - Thu Aug 6 09:19:05 2009

Ignition switch would not disable interior lights and head/tail lights though. I am at a loss. b/c the probably is not something I can duplicate at will, I am having a hard time troubleshooting it.

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Recently I noticed that my drivers side door control panel was not working. The control panel doesn't work at all; no power window, side mirror, or locks. I'm wondering if there is possible fuses under the hood that could possibly contribute to this problem, and if so which ones. If anyone has any possible solutions, please let me know

My 2004 Grand Cherokee Ltd Jeep had the same issue described on this post. The Driver side door controls would not work, Power Window, Memory seat and Pedals, Keyless entry, and the dome lights would not go off. Had to lock the Jeep manually, and the sercurity system would not engage. I removed the rubber gromet on the driver side door and discovered the ground wire was broken in two. All of the rest of the wiring harness was in tact. I used two smaller gauge wires in parallel to replace the broken higher gage ground wire. This fix allowed for the ground wire to be the same resistance, but more flexible. After the repair, everything works like a champ. Hope this is helpful.

Same thing all the time, I own one and have left me in the middleof the road 4 times, always electrical and mechanics don't know how to repair it. The engineer who design it maybe is the only one capable of solving the problem, just maybe.

Everybody should complain to see if they improve the design, just a simpler one

My 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a ghost in it. Only the interior overhead lights go off and on. Everything else works. Checked fuse #7 its ok. Checked the wiring inside the jeep on the drivers side and the boot to door all seemed fine. The dealership after running diagnostic first said a short on the overhead reading lamps in front replace bulb- if its a short should be wiring then they said that it is a $800.00 module that controls the interior lights, windshield wipers, door locks, windows, etc. It is only the interior overhead lights (not even the dash lights). From what i've read its the wiring that has broken. Help.

Here is the answer to the shorting questions that you have all been asking, or at least this is the answer for me. The problems described above relate to guages jumping and a clicking noise in the fuse box. (I suppose that may be a relay that is doing the clicking).

To repair this problem check this important area of your car:

1. shut of your car and I would recommend taking off one of the batter cables to completely cut all current. Open the drivers door and look mid way down and you will find a rubber boot that has wires inside.

2. Take an exacto knife or razor blade and slice this open long ways from left to right. (You can tape it all back together later)

3. Look for a bundle of wires inside. Look at all of them and trace them from one side to the other. You will find a BLACK wire that is a GROUND wire. Follow it as far as you can toward the body of the car, and as far as you can to the door side.

4. You will find that this wire is likely broken. It is a thicker BLACK wire and after opening and shutting your door a thousand times, the wire cracks! This causes the guages to go nuts and jump and makes the clicking sound. Solder it back together, to do this try pulling on it to get as much extra wire out as you can and strip it about 1/4 to 1/3 inch on both sides. Hold the two ends together with a small pair of locking pliars or with a small clip. Solder them together completely. Tape them with electrical tape. Put your Battery cable back on.

Tape up the rubber boot well to keep out water, and start your car. If this does not work, I am out of information, it worked for me. I has taken it to Jeep and the guy showed me right where the problem was and said they would charge me $275.00 plus tax to fix it! I did it for nothing. Thank you Mr. Service writer for telling me where the problem was. He said they do about 2 to 3 a month. Jeep knows about this flaw, but they do not give a crap. This is the last Jeep I will ever own, I am going back to FORD....By by, Chrysler.

Had the same problem with the black wire. Broke right in half. Was going to take it in but tried it myself. Took the big black rubber boot off and found the broken wire. Put it back together and it works perfect. I would definetly try it yourself before paying 200+ dollars. Even if it happens again at least you know what the problem is. Thanks for other post. They helped a lot.

looked for the black wire found it within a couple sec. but no broken wires found. any place else to look?

I to have checked the black wire. It looks like new. Does any one have any other ideas. Alone with my guages jumping, none of the electricals inside work, i.e. the radio, turn signals, headlights, horn, power windows or locks... NOTHING...

Dealership said it was "ware and tare" and that it wasn't their fault, if this is happening on all these jeeps why isn't there a re-call on this to fix the issue? it seems ridiculous to me that this problem is persisting on and on with these, this is the 2nd time I’ve had this problem in 2 years, then I found out that they put a screw right threw the wiring which killed the mirror. Just a heads up STAY AWAY FROM SHUMAN CRYSLER JEEP!!! They don't know what they are doing!

I have a broken pink wire with like a purple stripe in it where the accordian where the door open closes

I have the same problem the original poster has. Strange how it makes the dome lights turn on ... but anyway, I found two broken wires, black and orange with a stripe. They are both fairly thick wires; thicker than seems necessary for door accessories. Thick wires are notoriously difficult to bend, and will obviously fatigue and break after many a bending. I replaced them with a section of computer power cable by pulling the broken wires back into the pedal area, then pushed the new piece through the rubber boot and soldered it in. Used lots of electrical tape. Left plenty of extra wire coiled up by the fuse box. DO NOT CUT THE BOOT, though. I read some "expert" mechanic recommend that, but the boot is easy to pry off and will save you a messy dust-magnet of a hole. There are connectors on the door to disconnect the wires.

have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Special Edition, need to see if someone else may have an answer to. Today the cabin lights would not turn off at all, plus could not get the door locks and windows to work. Any ideas since I am not mechanically smart and have checked the usual stuff also. Thanks

If there are no fuses to deal with, it could really be some faulty wirings. i wonder why the company hasn't done anything yet to solve this recurring problem.
