Jeep-Cherokee - Jeep Cherokee electrical problem
Joel MAssey (65.5.48.2) - Wed Jul 9 14:18:15 2008
Bought 1997 Jeep Cherokee. It had been sitting for over 2 years. Had to replace fuel pump. Got it running and it runs good. Now the gauges, tach, radio and interior lights are not working. Before we got it running we noticed the gas gauge was working intermittently, now not at all. Also noticed when you put key in ignition with door open, there is no door chime. All fuses check ok. Any ideas?

My 2003 Grand Cherokee will not start (engine will not turn over)and the battery checks out ok. The cables and terminals have been cleaned at the battery and have good connection. With the key in accessory position, the radio and electric windows work but there is just "clicking" when you turn the key to start it. The engine will also not turn over when a battery charger is attached to the terminals for a jump start. Any ideas?

I have this same problem, except there is a blown fuse you may not have checked... it is a 10 amp fuse under the hood in the fuse box behind the battery (the first one on the right side [when looking toward the vehicle] closest to the battery)... I also do not know what the problem is. I did find some info at this web site that I have not tried yet: h t t p : / / e n . a l l e x p e r t s . c o m / q / A u t o m o t i v e - 2 4 6 5 / 2 0 0 8 / 4 / 9 8 - c h e r o k e e - s p o r t - e l e c t r i c a l . h t m (remove all spaces when you copy & paste into browser)... This is all the information I have found so far. The problem appears to be the interior lights. The fuse only blows when I open the door or turn on the interior lights, but not every single time, but eventually within about 1 hour of driving it happens. Not sure if the above web site is the answer, but I have heard several people have the same problem, so I can only imagine it is not a wire that rubbed and is now exposed...

My 1998 Jeep Cherokee Laredo (V-6)is running fine (Short distance drive), but the engine light is on all times. I took the car to a mechanic at a local GoodYear and he couldn't find the cause of it. Hesitate to bring the car to dealership for cost. Need advices for the problem.

Anyone know of a starting problem with the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee -- Ignition switch has been replaced and now it is not starting again (two weeks later). Sometimes it is towed and when they take it off the tow truck - it starts -- it has an evil spirit in it.

Does anyone know how to turn off the ESP/ABS/Traction control waring lamp. All three are on and the dealer cannot find a way to fix it unless I purchase all new tires (I still have about 30, 000 miles of traction). I have a 2006 Grand Cherokee and my warrenty expired about 2000 miles ago. Thanks, Rich

I have a 1996 Dual Fuel Jeep Grand Cherokee with an intermittent fault, It starts and goes fine but the engine cuts out (Most times when warmed up), sometimes it starts straight away again and other times it takes up to 10 minutes to get it started, when it has no problems the light on the gas/fuel switch stays on when turning the ignition on but when it will not starting the light goes on then off (I have changed the switch)This problem can happen 2 times a day or not happen at all for a week, hope someone can help. have you done checking for the presence of voltage at the load point in the circuit? that might be the cause of electrical malfunctioning.

My reply is for Jon Stechner...I had a similar problem, and my idle had to be adjusted. I just loosen it by spraying w/ WD40 and pushing it up and down, then it is usually fine for a long time.

My electric bun warmers no longer work (heated seats) on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Is this due to a simple fuse change somewhere? I checked the fuse block but i can't find any blown fuses under any catagory that I would associate with the seats. Electrical seat adjustments work fine.Suggestions?

I own a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Symptoms as they occurred:Drivers side (DS) master control on door intermittently worked to control windows and lock doors. Then one day the radio no longer turned on. Note that when the window controller intermittently worked, the radio still did not function. Also noticed that the cruise control light comes on but the control does not actually function or will only work for a short period of time. I'm wondering if this is an electrical issue or if it may be caused by a brake that might be hanging up? We did recently replace all shoes and front calipers/disks/pads. Also recently noticed that the rear window defroster will come on (amber light) initially and then shut itself off. Also need to mention that I replaced the 2 ohm infinity gold speakers with 4 ohm speakers. I have heard that this can cause issues with the radio but it worked fine for several months? I'm not sure that it's all related but everything kind of happened over a period of about 1 - 2 months. Now the DS master controller does not work ever. This causes all but one window (the PS front window) to not work as well. I have looked for any obvious wire wear on the DS door-to-car transition by pushing the black boot aside and saw none? Should I look further? Also checked all relays and fuses.

This could be the problem with instrument indication being INOP on your 1997/1998 Jeep Cherokee.Chrysler issued a TSB, number 08-15-99 on May 21, 1999 about this problem. I quote from the bulletin: SUBJECT: Erratic, Intermittent Cluster Operation/Intermittent Air Bag Warning light. OVERVIEW: This bulletin involves installing a repair harness containing a revised instrument cluster connector. MODELS: 1998 - 1999 (TJ) Wrangler 1998 - 1999 (XJ) Cherokee SYMPTOM/CONDITION: Some vehicles may exhibit an intermittent illumination of the air bag warning light or an intermittent tachometer or speedometer drop out. An Airbag Electronic Control Module (AECM) fault code - "No Cluster CCD BUS" message will be present. DIAGNOSIS: Using the DRB III(R), read and record all active and stored fault codes in the AECM. This condition is caused by minor oxidation of the BUS circuit terminals at the instrument cluster connector. Electrical terminals will show signs of oxidation, which will appear as darkened lines or marks on the cluster male terminals. These often appear as gray or black marks rather than the appearance of oxidation or corrosion usually associated with higher current carrying circuits. This condition will set a "NO CLUSTER CCD BUS" message. The fault code will usually be stored and not active. THIS TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN WILL NOT ADDRESS FUEL OR OIL PRESSURE GAUGE ISSUES. If this fault code is present, either active or stored perform the Repair Procedure. PARTS REQUIRED: 1 - 05016261AA Cluster Connector Patch Harness 1 - 04856975 Electric Contact Cleaner 2 - 04778570 Heat Shrink Tubing POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty

I have an 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited (63, 000 miles) that will not start at times. Yesterday after giving up and having it towed, it started in neutral (not park) when arriving at shop on tow truck. All gages and accessories work, but when turning ignition nothing happens. No click, no spin, no crank, nothing; as if the ignition switch was disconnected from starter. Mechanic has checked once and said starter was not the problem. HELP!

My 98 Jeep Cherokee , the gauges all go crazy, I push on the overlay for the gauges it all comes back on.Sometimes when I try to start it , it will not even turnover. What I have learned is that you have to turn ignition key and hold down while pulling the gear shifter , just barely , not quite into reverse for engine to turn over. Jeep should have had recalls on all of this. The back passenger window will go down like normal, but you have too open door for it to go back up. Now all my lights are acting weird . I'm sure their will be something wacky that will make it work for short periods of time .Very weird.

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 45K miles. Problem is either battery or starter. When I turn the key I hear clicking only. After a few tries, the started eventually turns and the engine starts. I'm not sure if my battery is pushing less than 13 volts, or if my starter has a weak electrical spot and is requiring more amperage. Can someone help.

I have a problem with my 1996 Jeep Grand cherokee Laredo. it stalls frequently and will not start again for several minuets. now it does not start at all. At first i thought it was the fuel pump so i replaced it but it still does not start. I am suspecting it is something wrong with the commputer or the Alarm system is malfunctioning. There seems to be no power going to the fuel pump but the relay is good and the fuses are good. Has anyone had the same problem or know what might be wrong with my jeep? TX Sophocles

Hi... Just like so many Jeep Cherokee electrical problems on here it seems that our 2000 Grand Cherokee is also posessed. The car will turn over but will not start. The all too common failure is all instrument panel gauges go crazy then the car stalls as if starving for fuel then it completely dies. It will turn over but will not run. We found that by repalcing fuse #12 (right side, under dash board, red 10 amps) is blown and is not easy to get to unless you remove the panel. Replaced it and the car runs fine for a couple of days then the fuse is blown again. So far, we have repalced the following and nothing seems to fix the problem: 1- Battery and terminals 2- Starter 3- Fuel pump 4- Control Module (ouch... that one was very expensive) 5- All fuses and electrical relays in the power distribution box (the one in the engine compartment). 6- Ground wires were all inspected and verified as clean and making good contact. So, unless someone suggests another method, or knows how to fix the darn thing, am gonna shoot it and put it out of its misery. so please help; and oh please mail me directly if you have any suggestions mkotaiche@gmail.com thank you

Sounds like there are a lot of electrical issues with these Jeeps. I'd be happy if Chrysler went bankrupt/went under. Will never buy a Jeep from Chrysler again! I have a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Something is drawing power from the battery, slowly but surely. I've replaced it with a new one and same deal. Can't leave it for more than a couple of days or Jeep will not start. Have to jump start it everytime...what a pain in the a$$! I think the whole Electrical module (PCM?) needs to be replaced but can't get a diagnosis from any shop so far that would let my warranty cover the costs.

My 2005 Grand Cherokee Laredo has the same problem others have described: When you turn the key, nothing happens -- no click of the solenoid to activate the starter, just nothing. After several attempts, for no reason, you turn the key and it starts. So .... it's not the starter, not the solenoid, not the battery and not the ignition switch at the key. Any suggestions??

I have a 1998 Jeep Cheroke Sport 6 cyl 4.0 liter automatic trans. I was having starter issues (the starter wouldn't turn) so I replaced it. When the new starter was mounted I reconnected the battery and the starter went nuts trying to start the engine. It burned out before I could get the cable off the battery and the key was not in the ignition. I thought it might be a fused solenoid and exchanged the starter. The second one did the same thing. I am about to go buy an ignition switch but thought someone might have another suggestion or advice on this problem. I really don't want to have to trace the whole electrical system. HELP!?!?!?

I have a 1996 jeep cherokee sport 4wd, great car but after 13 years it suddenly has started cutting out with no warning. It has no logic to the problem sometimes the car will go for 4 days other times it cuts out after 10 minutes. If i wait for a couple of minutes the car starts again without a problem and then run fine..............the local jeep dealre has run a diagnostic and cannot identify the problem...........has anyone any ideas please.........

My 2001 jeep grand Cherokee keeps blowing the ignition fuse. The original fuse is a 40 amp. When the problem started I tried installing a 50 amp fuse. When I did this the car would start with a jump. That did not last long. Now the 50 amp & 60 amp fuse blows immediately when I attempt to start the car.

I have a 2002 keep cherokee laredo and it wont start. I can hook juumper cable to it and it will run fine but when i turn it off it wont start back. When its not running i can try to use to horn or the lights and all my gauges go crazy. When i try to use the horn or the lights i can hear a wierd sound and it is coming form the fuse box under the sterring wheel. I have had the battery checked and the alternator and they both are good. What would be causing this? People has told me that it was probaly a fusiable link but if it was something electrical you wouldnt be able to jump it off could you?

I also have a starting problem with my 1994 Grand. I believe it is somehow related to the shifter as if I wiggle it (while it is in Park), it will start. But after doing this for months, now no amount of wiggling will get it going.

I have 1997 Cherokee Sport, just this morning when turning the ignition to engage starter I heard a 'click', then all the electrical died; no dash lights, dome light, or even engine hood light.About 10-20 seconds later, everything came back on when turning key forward 1 click to "on", attempting to crank the engine kills all the electrical for another 10-20 seconds. I made a SWAG (scientific wild arse guess) that there is some sort of over-voltage somewhere, and I was able to get it started after some experimenting, here's how... Before cranking the engine I turned my HVAC fan to full blast, opening my door to turn the dome lights on, turned the key forward one click to turn on the radio, then I finally cranked the engine. I'm guessing this siphoned off enough load from the electrical system, preventing an over voltage situation. The old lady has 198, 000 miles and I was hoping I'd get to 200k before having to ditch her. I'm not about to spend $500 to hunt down a gremlin like this. We all need a jeep electrical expert, that's for sure.

We have a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it also does not start at times. Today we had a tuneup done and my husband asked him why and he said, it could be the safety switch. If it does not start in park, put the car in neutral and try again. Also our power locks are locking by them selves. Our guages on our jeep, sometimes, the needles will drop all the way down.

My 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo is having the same electrical problem many people have mentioned. From time to time my jeep wont start, the gauges go crazy, clock resets to 12:00, radio station pre sets are lost. After several attempts in just decides to work. So far two different mechanics cant find anything wrong nor did the Jepp act up while it was in the possession of the mechanic. Still having problem. Suggestions are greatly appreciated. THANKS!

1999 Grand Jeep Cherokee Laredo - Gauges on dash go crazy....all of them. It won't start when this happens. I move tilt wheel up and down, sometimes it will start when i do this or move the gear shift in park position. Then it will start work fine for a month and all of a sudden do it again. Broke down Saturday we finally ended up jumping it and it started drove it home. Got in it Sunday drove it 15 miles shut it off and the gauges started going crazy again back and forth, back and forth..........wouldn't start....stayed with it until it quit, went in restaurant for an hour and came back up and it started right up. We took it to Tyler Jeep Dealership in Niles, MI and they can't find the problem, said nothing is wrong with it. I have already had it in the shop last month with the same problem, they said we have no problem. HELP! This jeep has 235, 000 miles on it and runs fine with the exception of this one problem. I am supposed to go and pick it up from dealership in the morning. There really is something wrong! Just not when they have it! :( If you have had this problem, please contact me! Thanks! Joe

My jeep cherokee laredo 2001 has a problem with the O/D appearing off spontaneously and not responding to the button on the gear. This problem, if driving continues, causes transmission heat to be elevated so I have to stop and turn off the engine then start again.Lately, it started to appear on even short distance so I decided to park and leave it at home.Otherwise, this car has no apparent problems. Please let me know if this is a gear problem or a simple electrical stuff.Thanks.

I have a 1998 Cherokee 4.0 The other day it ran fine, today I could not get it to start. sometimes I got a click when I turned the key, other times the motor would turn over but would not start. I found if I press on the gas slightly wile turning it over it will start, but soon as I let off the gas it stops. I replaced the Alternator about a month ago. My fuel gauage miss reads at times and my interior lights dim when I turn on the headlights. Is there an idle adjustment or a sensor that controls fuel flow?. I am confused.

we have a 96 Jeep cherokee, it will start, but quits as soon as you let go of the key. at the same time that it started doing this the radio and wipers quit working. have checked all the fuse in distribution box and all is good. there is no power to the circuit breaker that controls the wiper/washer with iginition on or off. sounds like its in the ignition switch, but does power go to the fuse box under dash or the ignition first.

HelloI have a Cherokee Laredo 2003. The engine shuts off while driving!!! I was told by the mechanic that it could be an electrical problem due to the programming of the key or the remote control. There are no error codes when scanning. When I try to crank the car I get the the "Key light" turned on. The manual mentions something about shutting the engine when this sign turns on. Any thoughts on the problem!!!

I also have the same issue as most people have noted, a 2006 Grand Cherokee that decides when it feels like starting. I have had it just 6 months, and it has been back to the dealership numerous times for this. First time they thought the remote transponder wasn't communicating with it to disarm the immobilizer, so they replaced the batteries in the key fob and off I went, and it worked for about a week. Then I took it back again, and was told the transmission control module needed to be replaced. After about a week again of seeming to start w/out a problem it started doing it again just about every other time I went to start it. Scheduled an appt to take it in, and conveniently it wouldn't start when I went to head to dealer. Had towtruck come out, and driver was able to get it to start in neutral. Service dept said neutral safety switch was bad, transmission was taken apart to repair that and they said the torque converter also needed replacing. (Luckily I have an extended warranty because that bill alone was over $2300.00!!) Well, they had it for a week for that repair, and guess what?? 3 days after getting it back, it's doing it AGAIN!! I took it back in yesterday, and this afternoon they called and said it did it for them, and they found a loose connection with the starter, so they fixed that. I am hoping to get it back tomorrow, but after reading all these posts, I fear my problem may still not be resolved! I agree these things are possessed!!

I have a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, My instrument panel has been going hay-wire. It started with the gas gauge jumping from full to empty even with a full tank. Then I went I vacation and when I came back the Jeep was dead. I opened the door and heard a clicking noise and had to get it jumped. The battery would not hold a charge when I shut it off. I replaced the battery and the terminals and has been running fine. The instrument panel comes on when I start it but then goes out. This includes all the gauges and the power windows, and the odometer. I checked the fuses and they all tessted OK. When I turn the Jeep off, the gauges come back on and the power windows work until I pull out the key. What could be the issue and what else can I do???

We have a 96 Jeep Cherokee I bought from my brother. It also has a quirk of not starting sometimes. When it does this my brother told me to put it in nuetral, and then start it. Seems to work 98% of the time. Have to let it sit 5 minutes sometimes, then put in nuetral and it starts. I was trying to see if anyone had the answer as to why this is happening, but after reading all these problems about starting thought I better share this information. Hope it works for everybody else. Must be a quirk with Jeeps.

check out http://forums.cnet.com and look up the post "jeep grand cherokee stalling problem" posted by 1996Jeep GC. By far this solution seems to be the most hopeful, I too have had this electrical problem on my 99 jeep wrangler and have brought it in to 2 different shops at least 4 times in the past 2 months and had no luck. Got a new starter I didn't need, a few new grounds, and new battery cables... today I will attempt to remove screws from pcm and replace them with shorter ones as well as zip tie the connectors to the pcm so the connection is good and tight. i will let you know ir either is successful

2005 cherokee same problem--no start, clicking instead of cranking, dash board blinking crazy. Also, keyless entry device no longer working (initally though it was related). Drove jeep the night before last with no problems. Tried to start truck late last night-that no start business. Waited til this morning to jump it with my other truck. Took a while to juice, but it started. Family had use of the car for a while up to a week before this problem started. Come to find out NO OIL! Now we're good. Made sure to come back and post MY remedy, though I'm sure if you already saw a mechanic he should've ruled "no oil" out. The no-start feature lets you know the car is ill...it could be any number of reasons. Good thing too-eventually it could've locked up! P.S. Interior lights wouldn't go off at all last night so I diconnected the battery until this morning. ???

Hello guys, Okay Im looking at buying a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Classic, It's out standing truck. Every thing is fine, but sometimes when you start it, none of the gauges work, and the odm. reads NO GAS, sometimes its fine, also the tach and speedo quit and the air bag light comes on, I read on what it was on here faulty connection at the cluster, and the remedy seems painstaking aswell as costly. Plz I really like this truck and Im a college kid I aint made of money, I just wanna know if its worth the time and money to fix. If you guys could let me know that would be awesome!!!!!! Thanks JR

I have a 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee. When I go to start it, it acts as if the battery is dead, there is no sound except a soft brief whir/hum. However, all the accessories come on (lights, radio, dash) the windows and locks work as well. I tried getting it jumped by various people.. Nothing. I took the battery out and got it tested at Wal-mart. The battery is in excellent condition. A little while after I got it, it was starting funny and idling low, feeling like it wanted to stall at stop lights. I got that issue repaired, it was the ignition coil. The mechanic who fixed it also inspected the Jeep and found no other issues. No starter issues, no spark plug issues, nothing. I keep it hydrated, making sure there's always oil and tranny fluid and all. So I really don't know what the issue could be. I've been online looking at other people's issues with Jeeps. and quite a few people have had the same issue. Also, the "Check 4WD Switch" has always been on the computer screen. Just wanted to know what you think.

My 1998 Jeep Cherokee 2WD Sport had a problem with intermittent warning lights displaying on the instrument panel. The tac and the speedometer would flatline, then wildly spring back to life. I thought there might have been an ignition switch connection to the problem. Finally, when my trip odometer began to work intermittently and I ran out of gas, I found a solution on the Internet. So the problem is that the instrument panel connectors become loose and dirty with age in the older Jeeps. The solution was to remove the entire instrument panel, which unplugs from captive sockets behind it, and meticulously clean all the pins. I used a fine emory board, alcohol and Q-tips and scraped inside the sockets with a very small screwdriver to increase the probability of good connections. This has restored full function to the instrument panel for a year now.

I have a 1999 cherokee sport that my wife and I just bought. It ran good but needed a lot of work because of high milage. The lady we bought it from said she never had a problem but parts were going and she has sunk money into it. we got it for $2000.00 and im habdy so how hard could it be. I powerwashed it and the troubles started. First it wouldn't start just a hum. figuring it was the starter solinoid I bought a rebult starter "bucks" It worked for two days and stopped starting. I checked every fuse and relay in the thing and it won't start. I did notice a common issues between all the posts here. We changed starters and checked electrical connections but nothing works. I changed all the fuses marked anything to do with the starter. I think it has to do with the neutral switch so thats next. goe any iseas need help ok thanks.

I have a 2000 grand cherokee laredo 4.7L. I had a tune up done over a month ago and everything was fine. Now the engine light has come on. The test said ignition coil 6. So I had that replaced. One day later, same thing but the test said ignition coil 7, so I also had that replaced. Now a day later the light is back on..what is going on. The jeep only has 69k miles.

reply to Danial #105Have the basic same problem. interior lights stay on after shuting off and removing key. Runs the battery down. Have checked all door switches, ignition switch and all fuses, suspect a relay somewhere. HELP. Is there a seperate timer relay that could be responcible? Everything runs well if i remember to disconnect the battery terminal. But this is getting old, and not there the security system is getting tempermental and will only disengage if the weather is above 50 degrees F. going to the garage Mon. hope there is an answer without costing me my first born.

I have a 1998 Grand Cherokee limited and my reverse lights dont work unless I jiggle the shifter around in reverse. Would it be the neutral saftey switch or is there another kind of sensor in there?
