91 cherokee spark problem

ian walks (24.66.118.177) - Mon Oct 8 22:25:01 2007

I have a 91 cherokee and when I test for spark I only have spark on cylinder 3 and 4. I have replaced the crank position sensor, alternator, and have tested with another coil. Can I remove the icu and take it to a dealer to get tested or do I have to tow it in?

Is there something else I can check before I do this? Thanks for any help!

These vehicles have had some problems with distributors. Open the distributor and look for signs of arcing. An intermittently interrupted spark could cause a stumble or hesitation as well. Distributors also can behave differently when hot.

i have an 89 cherokee that will turn over but not fire. I have noticed this intermittently in the past, but now it just wont start at all. There is ower coming from the coil, but no sparks- what could the problem be? my distributor or shaft position sensor??

start simple & work backwards. replace the plugs, plug wires, dist. If problem is still there, replace coil & ignition relay. If it fires & won't start, spray starter fluid in intake, if it trys to run, then its a bad fuel pump. Hope this helps.

I have a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Limited with a 4.0L engine. For the last couple of weeks it started and ran fine. Then it started to act up. When you go to start it it would click one time and would not start. Each time I did it it did the same thing click once. If you leave it sit for a couple days sometime it would startup and work fine. It would go for awhile then it would act up again. Would just click once each time I would try to start it. Do you have any idea what might be causing this?

I have a 1996 jeep cherokee sport 4x4. The crank sensor went in it. I replaced it and it's still not getting spark

Hey, I got a 1988 Jeep Cheroke Pioneer.Fires up pretty good but noticed last few days (got 6cyl inline) she powers out on hills such as sneak uphill with 30 or 40km/h.I exchangend Spark plugs & wires, Airfilter.Got a slight leak in Tranny but make sure fluid is good at all times, so it shifts decent until I get my parts.the problem is intermittently. can only hit accelerator to a certain level than powers out or backfires.on level road she runs good but when I hit 70 kmh my whole frontend vibrates.checked everything but nothing seems loose....I am on wits end...if anybody has similar trouble please answer

thanks a lot

Carla

I have an '88 cherokee with no spark.

No power coming out of the coil. Changed coil. It started.

Tried it again later and again no spark. Is the crank sensor bad? Or going bad?

I have a 96 jeep cherokee no spark I have replaced the spark plugs, coil, the whole distributer including cap&rotor still no spark. I was told to replace the plug to the coil I have done so. I used my wire tester to test the wires on the plug to the coil the ground is solid the power wire has power to it when I first turn the key to the on position then with in a second or two or when I crank it over the power cuts out. Something I have noticed is when I first turn the key to the on position I here a click noise in the engine compartment possibly a relay or fuse? then the plug has power within a second or two or when I crank it over I here a second click and there is no more power. I only have power to the plug for that brief second or two any help would be great thanks! btoof83@gmail.com

I have gone round & round with ignition problems on 89-96 cherokees. First thing to do is replace the crank position sensor (ohm check the old one), replace the coil and move it to the fender (engine heat/vibration can cause these to fail). If it still will not start, check the voltage on the wires going to the cam position sensor(base of distributor), if I remember correctly, it should pulse to about 5 volts. I no voltage or no pulsing when cranking, replace it. If there is still no spark, make sure all the ground connections are good. As a last resort, swap out the ECM.
