2001 XK8 CONVERTIBLE v MERC 500SL

I am currently torn between two cars for weekend driving namely the XK8 AND 500SL Merc. Having already owned an SL and been impressed by it's granite like reliabilty i'm obviously drawn back to this car. Having seen used values for XK8's drop recently they have also become very attractive but I read so many articles regarding engine failures and numerous other faults. I'm aware of the nicasil issues but a 2001 should be ok? If anyone can shed some light on any other problems or indeed advantages over the SL i would be very grateful.
