the car runs for a few blocks...then shuts down...will restart...but does it again.. the light on top right is red ..with a red X comes on...and the bottom right...yellow says check enging i don't have a manual so i don't know what they mean

Hi, I have a 1994 XJ6 that smokes a lot on start-up but then there is no visible sign of it burning oil. The guy I bought it from said that it had set for a long time and that the fiber piston seals had flat spots on them and some oil was leaking into the cylinder. Does this sound right and is there anything like an oil additive that would help this problem. Thanks
