Hyundai-Accent - Gas tank shut-off
Jennifer B. (69.41.96.31) - Mon Sep 15 09:47:56 2008
I have a 2000 Hyundai Accent. Two weeks ago the check engine light came on and simultaneously when I went to fill up my gas tank, the pump shut off like it was full after just a gallon or two. I took it in to be looked at this past week and the computer diagnosis for the check engine light said it needed a new gas cap, new gas/air (?) filter and a fuel injection cleaning/service, all of which I had done. Yet when I went to fill up, the same thing happened and this has happened at three different gas stations. I took it back to the service station and they looked it over an found no unusuals, no blockage, no hardening of the lines or hoses for the gas tank and said they can find nothing wrong. Has anyone else had this problem and what was the resolution because I have no answers so far? Thank you.

I have had a similar problem with m fathers car it usually stopped though and you had to leave it a few minutes before restarting its in the garage at the moment but last time it did it the fuel filter head was replaced.

I have a hyundai tiburon and the gas stops after each gallon so I have to wait for the gas to settle down and do it 12 more time. So far I have found no solution.

I have a 2000 Tiburon and the same thing happens to me. It's really very annoying. Either the gas pump keeps kicking off or it spews all over me. Then, after about 10 minutes or so when I finally have *some* gas, it doesn't want to start. This only happens after visiting the fuel pump. Anyone know what's going on???

there is a tube located under the gas tank that can be reached easily by reaching your hand under. Make sure you remove the metal tightener and pull the tube out the car will fill right up. attached is a picture of what it looks like.May the Lord be with you.

The same happens to me, on the gas station I used different pump and didnt happens, so I think its the mix between gas and air on the pump the problem not the car, as for probe, I did used again the same pump and happens again and change pump and nothing happens.

Jan.28, 09.. I have a 2002 Hyundai accent with the gas fill-up problem. Auto shut off occurs after every 1 to 2 gallons. I would be interested in seeing a picture of what the assembly of the tank looks like and where this canister is located. Would appreciate any help I can receive. Thank you.

I have a 2002 Hyundai Accent 4 door sedan and it started shutting off after I put .5 a gallon in when refueling. I have to constantly stop and start refueling to fill my tank up. It is so annoying and embarrasing at the gas pump to have this little car and it takes 10 minutes or more to fill up. I need help. The dealer said I need a new canister which would cost $650 to repair and I don't have that kind of spare money to pay out. Is there somewhere I can buy the part and take it to a mechanic to put on? Any suggestions anybody? You can email me at karamelky@aol.com with anything you come up with. Thanks in advance.

#4 Jason, (or anyone), if you have a picture of this Charcol Canister or the location of the purge valve, can you forward it to me since NOW New Port Richey Hyundai is asking $1200.00 to replace this canister and my 2002 XG350 is not worth another $1200.00, I used to think of Hyundai as a nice car, Not anymore.

I have a 2002 Hyundai Accent with the same problem. In reality, I'm reading all of your posts and thinking how lucky you guys are: mine won't even take 1/2 a gallon before the pump stops. With my car, it will literally turn off every 3 seconds, if not more...and this doesn't change, even if I stop and let it "breathe" for a few minutes. I know it's my car and not the pump because it happens at every station I've been to, even those in other cities. I rarely have the patience to fill the tank completely. The problem just started about a month ago, and I have yet to take it to be looked at.

I had the same problem for months, If I filled up more than 3/4 of the tank with petrol, the car would choke, buck , the engine light would come on and I would turn blue. I pulled out the charcoal canister (a little black box under the gas tank) and everything started working fine. I'm presently looking for a replacement. Does anyone know the correct term for it ? OH ... Accent GLS. Other than that, everything works fine.

I have the same problem with my 2002 XG350... I have tried to have it fixed 5 times. It seems to happen more often when the car is on empty, or when it's really cold out. I wonder if this is a Hyundai problem?

OK I have an 2002 Accent with the same problem. Here is how I bypass this and get gas with out shut off. first find this hose in the red square(check the pic #1 and #2) pic #1 pic #2 Next take a look in the under left rear side of the car, you will see some thign like the pic #3. pic #3 The green square is what you call charcoal canister and the red square is the canister close valve. Now get under the car and lock for the hose from the pic #1 that goes to the charcoal canister the rubber hose of 1/2 inch check the pic #4 to see what I mean. (locked from the front side of the charcoal canister, the side where is the left rear tire) pic #4 The green square is the purge line that goes to the motor side and the red is the hose what we want. Here another angle of the charcoal canister, locking straight up pic #5 Green - canister. Red - 1/2 inch Hose(this one). Blue - cober from the filler neck. Just disconnect this hose each time you want fill gas, and conect it back after that. if this works that means some thing is blocking the pass of the air in the canister, close valve and air filter side, problably some of charcoal in the close valve. if not the problem is in the fuel tank side. Hope this helps just google a little and check the Hyundai service web page www.hmaservice.com and lock for canister, DMTL. sorry my english.

all you have to do is look between the tire and wheel well on driver side back tire.when you look inside you will see a rubber hose.squeeze the hose clamp with pliers and slide up hose. then take hose off blackbox which is the charcoal cannister. fill up then put hose back. it worked for me a while but now gas is coming out of hose now.i will take box off and see if there is way to clean it out.

I have a very different car, but the same problem. I have a 1998 Mercury Sable and getting gas into it takes a lot of time and effort. One gas station has refused to fill it during cold weather. Filling it myself requires that I set the gas flow at absolute minimum and even then it will click off maybe 10 times to fill from 1/4 full tank. I've had it into the dealer when the car was newer and also into a gas tank specialist a few years ago and despite paying about $60 each time the problem was not fixed. I'm not sure if the problem is worse in cold weather, but the cold sure makes it bothersome to spend that much time trying to fill the car. And some gas station attendents are complaining big time about why I don't get this fixed. I understand the gas tank has two vent systems. One for filling and one for operations. The filling vent is simply a smaller hose inside a larger hose with both being blocked when the gas cap is installed. The smaller hose is to guide the gas into the centre of the tank and the larger hose which has the smaller hose inside it, lets air out of the tank when the tank is being filled. When filling the tank, I can see gas bubbles popping up around the filler hose. The shutoff built into the filler hose detects these to mean the tank is full, but can happen with only the first buck of gas being entered into a near empty tank. I can't believe the second vent system is the problem. It has a very small hose and filter system that can't process nearly enough air for fuelling. That is why there is a separate vent for fuelling. However, I can see that pulling the hose off may help somewhat to fuel the car. I'm looking for a solution. Hopefully something cheaper than buying another car.

I'm having the same problem with my 2002 Hyundai Accent. When I purchased the car, I bought the Extended Warranty. Does anyone know if this problem is covered under the extended warranty or am I going to have to pay for all of the repairs out of pocket?

2009 Accent only has 5, 000 km on it. Got gas today the servicetechnician managed to get $20.00 in the tank but the fuel shut off valve kept kicking in. She said she sees it all the time. Called the dealer car is under warranty have an appointment next week. If they can't fix it do they have to give me a new car. Thanks
