Geo-Metro - billowing smoke after engine re-build

We have rebuilt our Geo Metro engine. BEFORE the re-build the car blew out massive clouds of smoke when the engine was under stress. Now it is blowing constant smoke and there is oil blow-back coming into the air filter.

Response:blowing smoke after rebuild: in the reassembly of the engine, you needed to be sure that the open ends of the piston rings do not line up. Check that the oil ring fit well. Hopefully, you honed the cyclinders a little so the new rings could seat themselves to the renewed cyclinder walls. The valve stem guides should of been replaced. The valve stem should of been measured to determine if they needed to be replaced. It sounds as if compression is escaping the cyclinder after burning oil in the fuel mixture (oil from around the valve stems,(hense the clouds of smoke coming out the exhaust all the time) pressuring the crankcase pushing the oil ladened air thru the egr valve and the crankcase vent tube that is connected to the air intake. I would say that you need to do a teardown and re-check things. Note: if you do a ring job on the engine you better do a valve job. the new rings will increase the vacuum and actually pull the valves down a little(old valve springs)and suck oil around the valve guides. best of luck.

I need some help from the group. I own a 1992 Geo Metro 5spd manual, hatchback. The frame is totally gone underneath, but it has a new motor. I purchased a 1996 Geo Metro LSI with good Body, but blown motor. The motor runs, but NO power and lots of banging. Question, can I swap engine and transmission from car to car, even though one is a 1996 with they started the electronic OBII stuff? I am not knowledge of engine and my neighbor an I will attempt to swap engines and transmissions tomorrow. Can someone tell me if that will work? They are both 1.0 liter engines. Thank you Ed

i am in the same boat with ED (reply #2), we want to swap a good engine from a 1992 engine into our 1996 geo metro, but the housing around the end of the oil pan doesn't have the correct hole for the "counter". a friend says this can be remedied. does anyone know how?

hi if you are just swaping the motors that is ok i took the motor out of my 91 and put it in my 95. i removed the intake and exhaust and zip tied them back and changed the pans and the 95 runs like a champ.

Same thing happened to me after rebuild, I discovered the oil restrictor in the block had fallen out during cleaning at machine shop after the fact. The restrictor regulates lubrication to valve train and prevents excess oil build up in valve cover. Without this restrictor in place excess oil build up exits valve cover thru breather tube into intake. This restrictor is located in oil galley between head and block.

Hi, my name is Terence B. My email adress is tgb.27@live.com. I want to buy a 1991 Geo Metro. I would imagine in the future I would have to get the transmition and engine rebuilt. Do you know how much a rebuilt transmition would be? A used engine? Should I just go for a 1991 Honda Civic? Would the rebuilt engine and transmition be more expensive in a Honda Civic? By how much?

Reference blowing oil out the pcv valve ....My buddy has a 1.3 on his loehle 5151 mustang airplane ...He left the restrictor valve out... how tough would it be to make one? Cannot be found without buying a used engine..we find.... I have a lathe...surely a simple part? Herb
