Out of oil and Water

What happens if you run your 1997 Geo Metro out of water and oil? I had just put in oil and water and it over heated so I changed the thermostat and that didn't help. It's now getting worse. I can go about 3-6 miles and have to shut down to cool down! What do I do? Where do I look first?
