Geo-Metro - Is the 1992 compatible with 1996 Engine & Trans?

I need some help from the group please ASAP!. I own a 1992 Geo Metro 5spd manual, hatchback. The frame is totally gone underneath, but it has a new motor. I purchased a 1996 Geo Metro LSI with good Body, but blown motor. The motor runs, but NO power and lots of banging on the 1996. Question, can I swap engine and transmission from car to car, even though one is a 1996 when they started the electronic OBII stuff? I am not knowledge of engines and my neighbor an I will attempt to swap engines and transmissions tomorrow. Can someone tell me if that will work? They are both 1.0 liter engines. I want to bring the 1992 into the 1996 body, will it work? Thank you Ed

I Put an engine from a 96 in a 91. It was a lot of work. Some of the main things you have to count for is the fuel injector (TBI) and intake. Remove the intake from the original engine (the 96 metro and replace the 92's intake with it. You must use a new intake gasket!) Next swap distributors. This is a must because the 92 distributor has a different timing sequence than the 96. The 96 has 4 timing marks for the pickup to sense. 2 1 1. And the 92's pickup has 1 1 1 for timing (believe me...it runs like garbage if you dont do this, it is crucial). Next swap the thermostat housing because there is temp sensor on it that is nesassary for proper fuel mix (dont wanna carbon up your plugs and get nasty mileage). Next you have to use the same alternator matched to the year of the engine. The pulleys offset was changed in 95. Otherwise your metro will squeeal like a getty schoolgirl and chew a belt in a matter of 3000 miles let alone you cant put the timing belt cover back on (I know this to be true lol.) you might have to change the connector on the alternator. It's been a few years.) The computer then should be matched with all of its original equipment it was programmed for and should run well. Theese instructions are for the manual transmission only. Automatics are a bit more fun. Well thats what I have found from experience. Take care.

Gabriel , have similar situation. Am installing a manual 91 trans into a 92 automatic body & motor. If I could find a 92 manual geo engine harness and ecu I would use it. However all I have now is the 91 ecu andharness. The91 ecu is for manual but it has plugs to match older 91motor not this 92 motor. Current problems include:no spark with key on12v power to thecoil 2 terminals. Emissions have changed some to. Maybe I should tradecarberators or intakes to so harness can meet up with its intake conections. Then swap the distributors to match spark with 91 ecu ? Then it still maycome to no spark or mismatched 92 fender harness with the91 engine harness/ECM. One of the theoretical questions is will or how will the fuel injector be signaled to opperate, do we suppose there be any issues related to this??

Did you get your swap done ? By chance do you have a extra trans out of the 96 ? If so I would be enterested if it's a manual.
