Geo-Metro - 94 metro slowly became harder to start/idle

I bought this car about 18 months ago. first 6 months it worked great. then it started having problems idling. it would stall at stop lights only if i had the ac on at first. that slowly developed into stalling at idle. then i started having problems just getting it started. which has slowly become worse. i can eventually get it started if i give it a jump. i cant get the check engine light to stay on long enough to check that. what should i look into first?

i'm surprised no one has any suggestions... i had my grandpa take a look at it and he thinks it might be some kind of sensor in my exhaust or timing belt. my brother thinks it's either the carb or the valves. i'm thinking it's the computer or maybe the timing belt needs replaced. i'm haing allot of problems with the car and i'm not sure what is actually related. for instance the ac/heater fan cuts off every once in awile and i got to smack it to get it working again... my blinkers stopped working the other day... and i had to replace both the headlight and brake lights bulbs in quick sucession. maybe i got a bad relay? i dont really know a whole lot about it. but anything anyone has to offer is apreciated.

ok so i think i might be on to something... i think it is the computer. i didnt think much of it at first but strange things have happened with things like the door open sound and the dome light not working correctly. of course the ac like i mentioned b4 but also the heater fan shutting off mysteriously. it could be a bad relay somewhere i thought but when i hooked it up to a obd-1 checker thing... it gave no error only said it got no response from the car. i'm planning on waiting for the check engine light to start flashing one day again soon and i will try to get the error code.

well i've cleaned out the vacuum lines and it seemed odd to me that i got air from somewhere under the intake manifold... while blowing air into the line. it seems odd but maybe that's normal?i also am checking out the exhaust. i know, it has a bad muffler on it that has some serious dents in it and is poorly connected.

I had a similar problem with my 1991 GEO Metro. As it became harder to start I did several things to try to fix it. It was not until it would almost not start that I found out what the problem was. I checked the compression in the cylinders and they were very low, from almost nothing in #3 to only about 90 in #1. The exhaust valves were burnt and the head needed rebuilt.Another time this happened the catalytic converter was plugged up. Hope this will help you.

I have a 1994 Geo MetroRuns excellent. Never had 1 problem. Until now. The bottom frame rusted out. Everything else is great. Great engine and new radiator. Can this be fixed. Or should I just sell it. Anyone interested in advising? Thanks Angie
