our Yukon has died on us twice now. We had it towed to the house and the driver said try hitting the gas tank with a mallet to see if starts. It tried to start and after a few whacks it started and we drove it for a day. On the way home I noticed itacted like it was going to die so I gassed it and made it home. I replaced the fuel filter and it won't start again. My uncle said he had a similar issue and replaced an o2 sensor but there are no codes. Please help! Thanks.

only way to know for sure is to hook a fuel pressure tester to the shrader valve (the valve on the fuel rail that looks like the valve you put air in the tires with) and find out if the fuel pressure is within specs. (i believe its supposed to be 35 to 45psi). for a quick test, the next time it wont start, just press on the shrader valve core and see if anything squirts out of it. no pressure, no working pump. any REAL shop should be able to diagnose a fuel pump in about a half hour.good luck ty

Have a 1996 Yukon that started a little hard one day. That evening it would not start at all anymore. I suspect fuel pump and have tried the mallet on the fuel tank. No luck. Also have checked and replaced relay. It works yet no start. I used to be able to hear a whine like the pump when the key was turned on but no more. Suspect possibly fuel pump but curious what else may cause this. Willing to try all ideas. Again tried to slap the tank with mallet and it makes absolutely no difference. THanks, Dan

1996 GMC van; 5.7 Vortec motor. No power getting to fuel pump. Relay and fuse both good. Was running fine on highway. Refused to start after 10 minute rest stop. Help please!

I have a 1996 GMC Suburban and a 1999 GMC Yukon. First, if the fuel filter clogs, the fuel pump will fail. You should replace it at least once a year. That said, I have replaced the fuel pump in the 1996 Suburban once, and I am replacing the fuel pump in the 1999 Yukon for the third time. The first two were OEM replacments, the one I am in the process of replacing is a kit, which includes a new pigtail wiring harness. It changes the connector from a square to an inline row of contacts. There seems to be an issue with the original connector.

96 Yukon SLT 5.7, 4WD with 120000 miles. Engine turns over but won't start. This has happened twice now after I filled up with gas. I tend to squeeze in as much fuel as possible. After I fill up I then drive about 30 miles. It will restart all day long, but once it sits overnight, it won’t start. I’ve heard that over filling the fuel tank could possibly cause these symptoms. When it does run, it runs great. I’ve done all the usual within the last 2000 miles; new plugs, plugwires, rotor, cap, O2 sensors, coolant temp sensor, and fuel filter. Had injectors cleaned at the GM dealer. The fuel pump relay failed and was replaced. Just replaced a leaky water pump. When I turn the key on, I hear the fuel pump running (a soft humming sound) for about 2 seconds. Thanks for your time and expertise.
