98 Taurus wagon, oil leak

There is an oil leak in one of the two metal pipes, about 3/8 inch in diameter, which traverse a low shelf in back of the radiator of my 1998 Ford Taurus Wagon. This is a clunker which I use onl for short trips of 2/3 miles.

The pipes are attached with wierd metal crimps to rubber hoses going to the radiator on the right side and to rubber hoses going to the motor/transmission on the left side. I can find no diagram for this cooling system. An Auto Zone clerk said it is cools the engine oil but the replacement part looks nothing like what I have. A friend says it cools the transmission fluid.

What is this system for? Can I replace the metal pipes by heat-resistant rubber hoses which will be easy?
