I have a 2002 ford ranger with 5 speed manual transmission and it was shifting fine yesterday, this morning I get in and I can't get it into gear has anyone ever had this problem and if so could it be the Clutch master cylinder or the slave cylinder.Any help would be great. Thanks.

my son has a1993 ford ranger manual 5-speed sometimes when he goes down the highway and lets off the gas you hear this whizzing sound and the truck appears to be in neutral then when you step on the gas it pisks up power and everything is fine it seems to do this in all gears and sometimes when he goes to back out of the driveway even though he is in reverse it sits there so he puts it in neutral gets out and pushes it a little hpos in puts it back in reverse then its fine thanks

I have a 94 Ranger with a 5 speed manual transmission. Iam noticing that from a stop it is very difficult to put in first gear, usually have to rev up the rpm's and then will engage. Was told that it could be the syncronizers is this true.

Well here's what i know, all these tranny's are Mazda MDO5's R-1's for rangers and the like, R-2's (heavier duty) for f150's and the such, putting the r-2 where an r-1 was has some issues.......as well as putting an heavier early (better) trans where an r2 was, it don't matter what engine size you have (4cly thru 5.0 v8) or 4wd/2wd, ford/mazda make, all the same tranny's........everyone say "thank you FORD!......these are one piece bellhousing/trans with an internal clutch "plastic" hydro slave cylinder, they are fully syncoed even reverse, The fluid for these is tranny fluid!!! gear lube will not work! Hard shifting in 1st and reverse, most noticable is synco's, having to rev to shift or bump is syncro's.......the whizing is dry clutch throwout bearing, if clutch feels normal when depressed, but slipping/hard shifting it's the clutch disk and/or pressure plate, if clutch is soft / not normal when depressed, and won't go into gear when running, it's the slave cylinder.........NOW the bad news!!! with the exception of the slave cyl, which is a pain to install, even worse to bleed properly.....the trans HAS to come out!....at this time the pilot bushing, slave cylinder, throwout bearing, pressure plate and clutch disk all need to be done, $500-$600 at shop, parts/labor, can be done by GOOD shadetree do it your selfer....the syncro's require a $400 kit, plus $500 labor, and needs to be done by expert manual trans mechanic........Now you know why the prices/quotes your getting are so high! They are charging you $200-300 for ripout and replace on a $1600, bench built, ready to go tranny!........sorry folks, i know the truth hurts....good luck.....bw

This is a P.S. to my earlier post.......To John; other than a extended set of SAE/METRIC tools, plus a warm concrete floor, and a good friend who works for beer! you will need a plastic clutch alinement tool(under $30 at good auto parts store)this is to aline the splines of the clutch disk to the splines of the engine crankshaft before torquing down the pressure plate, so the splines of the trans input shaft will slide right in, (with a little grease) THERE is no exception to this, unless you want an 6 hour headache, then go buy the alinement tool anyway!Be sure to grease the inside of the pilot bushing with any good lube grease, before installing the clutch disk, there will be a small smooth, about 1/2 long nipple at very front end of tranny input shaft, if both arn't well lubed, you be replacing the whole tranny in under 5k miles........To Steve; unscrew the rubber shifter cover, pull up toward top of shifter, to get out of way, look at the shifter mount to the trans, while playing with shifter, if loose, thighten down.......i've never seen this...there is top cover on this trans, which is more or less accessable from here, unbolt and remove, then try playing with shifter again, there are U shaped shifting forks in there, connected through the trans housing to the shifter, what's more common is through hi miles/hard use these wear out, if so, it's the extended trans rebuild kit, or new/rebuilt trans.....i'm not trying to be preachy guys, i assume you want it stright..........that's the way i'm giving it!.....bw......Just another note; i'm 51, and hate to even change a flat tire anymore, if i buy the parts and have a shop do the work for a couple hundred, i always let them do it, tired of busted hands, headaches, and no one to blame if things go south, i always request the old parts back, just to look at, and make sure the new was put in........if your cheap, young with some mech ability, then go for it, the ford's not moving anymore, anyway! and the the broke stuff is only worth a core charge to boot........good luck, hope these post help....bw

I have a 1993 Ranger 4X4 4 cylinder. In 2 wheel drive with the hubs out and the 4 wheel not engaged, I pulled up to a stop sign, stopped, put it in 1st and pulled away. Shifted into 2nd, started to accelerate and it started to free wheel. Nothing - no gears at all now. It made no noise, didn't jerk, just stopped pulling. Any ideas? ... Thanks ... Bruce

Hi, I recently got my truck towed. I have been driving it and lately it has taken a little longer to speed up. But nothing to drastic once you get going it is fine and doesn't rev over 3RPM. It was acting slightly funny and I went into a store and came back out to restart the truck (a 93 Ford Ranger 4X4 XLS I believe) The truck started and shifted into gear (reverse) but would just rev and wouldn't hardly go anywhere. It moved maybe ten feet. Went to drive forward and the same thing. The clutch is a little tight to press in, but not to out of the normal. It is being looked at and I was wondering what are the possible things that could be wrong with it and approximate cost. Thank so much for the help!

Hello everyone, I have an 89 Ford ranger with the 2.9 V6 5 speed. However my 5 speed is the Mitsubiti transmission that ford put in for that year. I had to replace the clutch in my truck. If it's a 4X4 take the rear transfer case off of the transmission it makes the biggest difference in the world. Then you can drain the transmission to see what the fluid is looking like. Smell if it's burnt, black, or has metal pieces in it. Some transmission noise might be caused by lack of fluid. Sometimes it's because of the piolt bearing (if clutch pedal is depressed). If you are trying to start from a stop and are not getting anywhere, then it might be because the clutch fluid is low, a really rough way to test if the clutch needs to be replaced is to; 1) Block all the wheels 2) Start the truck 3) Put into highest gear and observes what happens. It should lerch foward and quickly die.. If it doesnt and stays running at an idol and doesnt lerch.. Chances are the clutch is bad. It's always easier to pull the transmission Vs. the engine when you are going to replace the clutch. And I also figured out why my engine wasnt running last week..

I have a 1995 Ford Ranger w/5 speed trans. I notice it has started making a "clacking" sound like something is loose. It does at idle and also while driving if you ease off the gas. I also notice it does this at take off and when shifing gears. Actually if you stand next to the truck during idle it can definitely be heard. Clutch fluid is good. Clutch seems to operate fine. Any thouhts on what it might be? Thanks

I have a 1994 ranger with a 5spd tranny. I got home tonight and went to back up and it ground into reverse. I didn't think much of it just that I went to reverse to quick so I backed up and parked and just sat there for a minute and I tested it and tried to go into reverse again parked and it did the same thing. It is like the clutch is not fully engaging is there any easy fix or does it sound like the throw out bearing is going out? Thanks in advance!

I have a 1995 Ford ranger XLT with 5 speed manual. The truck rides fine but after a while the clutch will get hard to depress and will not let the gears engage. If I rev the engine eventually sometimes it will jump into gear and I can pull it off the road and the clutch will become very hard to depress. It does not happen all of the time but after about 5 to 10 miles of driving. If I park it, and leave it sit for a while, usually a couple of hours, it will be fine again. any ideas or suggestions?

OK. HERE GOES. ALOT OF PROBLEMS SEEM TO BE CLUTCH RELATED. #ONE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR SYSTEM HAS BEEN COMPLETED FLUSHED. DIRTY FLUID IS THE WORST ENEMY OF HYDRO SYSTEMS. #2 MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE FLUID IN THE SYSTEM, NO AIR. THEY ARE A REAL PAIN TO BLEED. THESE ARE THE BASICS. IF NONE SOLVES THE PROBLEM THEN CAN IT ONLY BE A BAD SLAVE CYLINDER, TO WHICH YOU HAVE TO REPLACE. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE OFFENCE BUT, A LOT OF PEOPLE DO NOT REALIZE THAT YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE CUP IN THE TOP OF THE MASTER CYLINDER BEFORE ADDING FLUID. GOOD LUCK, RANDY

Reply #35I'm sure by now you've gotten a new clutch , but if not have the whole clutch replaced , if your gears aren't messed up from " i learned how to speed shift and made sure i parked on a hill." you might find a replacement transmission at a salvage yard or get a rebuilt one, --either way always avoid speed shifting in a ford ranger. this is a cry for help to anyone who can!i have a ford ranger 98 4x4 xlt 5 speed. i dont know much about mechanic stuff but im having problems with the truck. here's the problem: Ex; im driving forty mph and i come to a stop at a red light or whatever, so i immediately step on the clutch and the brake at the same time putting my stick in neutral. once im stopped and my foot is still on the clutch with the shift back in 1st ready to take off again, my truck stays on 2 rpm's and its just sitting there roaring like if i was doing 30 in 1st gear! it takes at least 20-30 seconds for the rpm's along with the roaring to go down. the main problem is that everytime is step on the clutch pedal just to shift up or down it sends my rpm's straight up like if i was pressing on the gas(but im not). that and the check engine light was on before all this started happening and today while this problem is at its worst i noticed the light was no longer on. PLEASE HELP! Thanks -John

I have a 2002 ford ranger, it started getting hard to shift, I checked the slave cyclender and it was real low .I added fluid and it shifted just fine for a couple weeks, now it's back to hard to shift with motor running , shifts easy without motor running. I checked slave cyclinder fluid level and it was okay. I bleed it twice , get nothing but fluid coming out. yet It still is hard to shift. and it seems that if you shift the gears before starting the motor , then start it . it shifts a little better. Any ideas what may be wrong, i'm not very mechanical . and this is about all i know to try.

I replaced the clutch and pressure plate on my 94 ford ranger 4.0 v-6... Here is the problem. Bled system. New slave and res put in a year ago. Clutch pedal operates drive shaft in reverse whether I have the shifter installed or not. speed up engine and wheels go faster. press in the clutch and wheels slow down.let out clutch pedal wheels move until I press on the brake.engine cuts off. I have movement in the slave. I CANNOT GET THE GEAR SHIFTER TO LIGN UP WITH ANYTHING IN THE TRANNY SO I CAN SHIFT OUT OF REVERSE!!!!! I may have taken the shifter out in the reverse position before I pulled the tranny. What do I need to do to get the shifter to go into the tranny so it is in the revers position that the tranny is obviously in???

Im still using it and am hoping for a cheap fix.. At the moment i have to start is in either reverse or first gear ( which ever way i plan on moving) eg.. leaving a parking spot i start it in reverse, once backed out I have to turn it off and put it in 1st then restart the truck... it is very hard to up and down shift through all gears.. any advise or help would be much appretiated!!

Test drive from where you met the "guy" to your local marcus then test drive back to where you met the "guy" if no problems with your clutch show up and the engine compartment isnt oiled up then take it to a shop for the error codes
