Ford-Ranger - Ford Ranger Auto Trans No Reverse

I have a 2002 2wd auto Ford Ranger. So far it has done just about everything that has been listed on this site. Thankfully you have provided some good solutions. So here is my latest:Reverse does not work. On top of that, to get it to work in drive you have to cycle it through low or '1'. It will drive ok until you put it in park then you have to start the cycle over again to get it to work in drive. While it does shift in drive after tricking it, it is not smooth and apparent that something is wrong. Any suggestions? I did hear one. Change oil, filter, and replace gasket in transmission valve body. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks, Benny

I've had the same thing happen. It turned out to be low transmission fluid. Mine leaks a lot from the rear of the transmission (where the drive shaft is connected). When I checked it with the engine off, it looked over full. When I checked it with it running, there was nothing on the dip stick. Wonder how much to replace that seal. A 95 with 140, 000 miles on it isn't worth spending a lot of money on. Everyone with 2000 plus models seem to have a lot of problems. I've never replaced anything except the plugs and wires. No alternator, AC compressor, fuel pump, water pump, nothing. If It fell into pieces on the drive, I would have gotten my money's worth. Shows how different years can see a big change in quality. For instance I have a 2001 Camry, no problems with 120, 000 miles. But Consumer Reports says newer Camrys have a much higher level of problems.
