96 Ranger XLT ABS light/brake light

My ABS comes on after the engine gets warm and the brake light comes on when I accelerate in first gear (standard). The brake light only stays on while I am in first. I would appreciate any info that would help me avoid a huge diagnostic fee. I know about counting the flashes from the RABS connector, but is there documentation on what the codes mean and what to do? How many sensors are involved?
