| 56 Reg Focus - Engine Systems Failure!Starting my 56 reg Ford Focus Diesel Sport on Thursday, and without it warming up, I immediately turned hard right onto our road to drive to work. The lights were on, the windscreen wipers, heater and fan were all on and I was the only person in the car.Immediately a red light came on, on the speedometer side of the dashboard, right next to the computer screen. At the same time a message appeared - " Acceleration reduced" I slowed down and stopped but did not turn off the engine, for fear of setting off the immobiliser. Continuing to work, the only thing noticeable with the car was that there was a lag in acceleration after each gear change. After arriving at work, about 15 minutes driving, I parked the car, turned off the engine and restarted it. It worked straightaway and no warning lights came on. I can only surmise that this was because the car had warmed up. After work, about 10 hours later, I returned to the car and when I turned the key I had no reaction from the ignition, all the lights on the dashboard lit up, a red light at the top of the dash started flashing and the computer screen said: "Steering Assist Failure" followed by: "Engine Systems Fault" That was it - I could not start the car, although I could sit and listen to the radio or even have the fan switched on, so I presume it was the immobiliser kicking in. The car seemed fine during the week when it was cold outside, even freezing, it was only when the car had sat in the damp and rain over Wednesday/ Thursday night that it had a problem. It seems to happen when I am turning hard right, although that could just be a coincidence, and the engine is cold and it has been damp over night. Any ideas? |
| To go further: The car has failed to start again tonight with exactly the same fault! I managed to get the engine started but even pressing the accelerator pedal hard to the floor did nothing to increase the engine revs - it just ticked over - can anyone help as Ford don't seem to know what to do??? Thanks Lee |
| Ford think it is the Cluster! We are waiting to see if that was the problem. People's Ford, Edinburgh, have been a great help and I cannot fault their advise and work so far. As for the car I will keep the forum posted as we are now becoming embroiled in getting the Edinburgh dealer, but nationwide, we bought the car from to pay for the work, as it is within 6 months of purchase. Consumer rights as they are that means that, wether the warranty has expired or not the dealership are responsible for either fixing, replacing or refunding the car..... let the fight begin.... This is one company that I shall not be dealing with again, once the car is fixed but I shall not name them at this moment in time.... |
| I've got exactly the same problem with my 05 zetec.Ford thought it was a kinked wire on the cluster but it cut out again within 200m of leaving the garage! At least it has played up while it was with them so they know there is a problem.Awaiting more news |

#611/26/10 04:30Roter Zoran | Hello, I have a Ford Focus 2005 1.6TDCI 80KW, and i have a big problem, when i go to work on monday i started the car and my car was going normally for at least 5 miles and then i see that the dashboard meters are off and on the LCD was first "Steering System Failure" then i recognized that te engine is off so i stopped and when i want to start the engine there was nothing and on the LCD display was this "Engine Systems Fault". Then i pull my car home and i want to connect to de ECU with OBD2 connection and software and i couldn't connect to the car! So now I have checked every fuse, now i will look for all connections and wires to ECU or anithing else? CAN SOMEONE HELP ME with my problemm, Could it be that the ECU is DEAD?!? |
| Seems like this type of problem is common towards Ford Cars with more than your average powered engines. I drive a Ford Focus ST 2.5 5 cylinder car and I noticed the very same warning light appear about 2 days ago, 1st the steering assist failure , then acceleration reduced and finally engine systems fault, I am posting this from South Africa if Ford abroad cannot figure out exactly what the problem internationally fat chance the team from South Africa will have any answers, what to do other than fight this with them. |
| I have exactly the same problem with my o6 reg focus st, happens in exactly the same way. any advice on this? |
#902/08/11 07:34sean harrison | Has Anyone know what the problem is just happened to my 05reg tdci 1.6???? |
#1005/02/11 13:05Niall Saunders | If you 'thump' the top of the dash, it is likely that the fault will be eliminated - albeit temporarily. Alternatively - if it is safe to do so - try driving at this reduced speed, whilst whacking the top of the dash. It might recover (I have managed 20 miles home driving in this manner!!!) But, basically, Ford have ripped you (us) off - there is a bad connection "to do with" the instrument cluster (already a problem well enough documented to have made it all the way on to BBC TV's "Watchdog" Consumer Rights programme - and Ford have agreed to replace affected clusters as the reduced price of UK GB £99). However, go into a Ford dealership, and the (May 2011) quoted price for a replacement instrument cluster is £600 - and they claim that the Ford £99 offer "doesn't apply, because that was only for pre 2003-registered vehicles". I am now going to try and rip out my instrument cluster and see what the 'intermittent connection' problem might be. If I am successful, I'll re-post. Cheers, Niall (Aberdeen, UK) |
