Ford-F250 - misses until warmed up, then just fine

05 diesel just had all of 60, 000 mile maintenance performed. Prior to that (day before) the vehicle was started in the afternoon (about 90 degree weather) and attempted to drive. When the accelerator was depressed the motor "stuttered" and black smoke came from the exhaust pipe. Decided to limp to a mechanic in this condition, but as the vehicle warmed the condition lessoned until finally operating normal. 3 days later and a quarter tank of fuel through it and the condition still exists. I informed the mechanic of the problem before the service was done and was told that the fuel filter may be the cause (the check engine light had recently came on). A diagnostic check was performed and it pointed to the fuel filter as the cause of the engine light. Well, the cold operating temp stutter is still there. Before I spend anymore, any simple quick solutions? Ha ha.
