Ford-F250 -
F250 Diesel Starting Problem

GONZO (192.156.52.34) - Sun Jul 20 12:49:22 2008

I currently own a F250 diessel it turns over but does not start. Now I wet down a rag with some gas and put it over the intake filter housing the engine started turning over and ran but died very quickly. Is this a fuel pump or injection pump problem? or could it be another problem?

im stumped and don't feel like spending money especially on diesel testing out different fuel components...

Reply #1 Nick (24.1.201.221) - Sun Sep 14 13:41:17 2008

I don't know if this is your particular case, but a common problem with the Navistar diesels (the engine in the Ford diesel trucks) is that the CPS or crank position sensor goes out due to vibration. If the computer isn't getting a signal from the CPS, it won't allow any fuel to flow from the injection pump. Worth a look, the sensor runs about $50.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY 99' F-250 AND CHANGED OUT THE CPS ON IT AND ENDED BEING THE FUEL PUMP THAT WAS BAD.

Reply #3 Gene (69.20.158.197) - Thu Oct 9 21:13:40 2008

Started engine, ran 1 minute. shutdown. ten min later tried to start.crank but no start. All checks pointed to no fuel. either bad pump or low voltage at the pump. Battery charger for 30 min and started immediately as usual. After not being run for a week, battery voltage low. If it gets below 12.4V. will not open the pump valve to pump fuel...turned out to be a cheap easy fix...

2001 F250 Diesel. Engine shut down while driving on freeway going 70. Started again and it ran a few minutes and then shut down again. This repeated at least 12 times. Everytime I cranked it, white smoke blew out exhaust. Could this be Cam sensor, fuel pump or something else?

Thanks

I have a 99' f-250 diesel that won't turn over. It's been on the charger for nearly 24hrs, I've tried to start it, but it won't catch/start. Think it may be the alternator; batteries won't hold a charge. Recently filled up with biodiesel fuel for the first time. Could this be the issue? I'm not sure. Someone please help.

I have a 2000 F250.The heater has to be pluged in all the time so the engine will start, but the real problem is when the engine starts to turn over you must pat the gas pedal to crank in order to pick the oil up in the pan.If you don't the oil never picks up and it shuts down. The dealer has changed the check valve in the oil cooler and checked the glow plugs and said they were fine.He doesn't know what to do.Need help.

Then it dies, cranks fine but wont start until 6 hours later. 680 miles out of warranty Ford Motor CO refused to offer any assistance for repairs. The van has never run good. ALL ford could say was, "We hope they come out with a fix soon." It has not run for 14 Months. I have replaced the High Press Oil Pump, Oil pump cover, Stand pipes, oil cooler, IPR Valve, both Wavey Rails and Resealed all 8 injectors. It runs the same as it did 14 Monthes ago. I have a 2003 Diesel F-250 7.3 L engine ignition that won't turn over at all in cold weather. Lights, radio work but no turning over at all when near 32'F. Once the temperature is 40'F the ignition will turn over and the engine starts and runs fine. I have taken it to dealership mechanic but he can't find anything. Any ideas? I am stumped.

I have a 1999 F250 7.3. At first it was difficult to start each day. Over time it would have to be plugged in every night to start. After about a month the truck would shut down driving on the highway, but would restart. Finally it died on the road and would not start. The batteries are charged and I replaced the cam sensor but it still will not start. The truck has 215, 000

miles. Any ideas or help please

I have a 1999 F250 SD Diesel and have just gotten over the problem that most of you are talking about. My truck started, ran a few minutes then shut down and would not start up again. It would crank but no fuel, checked fuel pump it was no power getting to it. Called everywhere, finally got to looking at book for hundredth time and found RELAYS ! There are four relays behind the radio, one is for the fuel pump. It is hard to find, there is small black rectanglur cover over them, located straight back when you remove the radio. This cured my truck, hope it helps you !

I worked on my 2002 7.3 it sputterd and cut off the other day and would not start back. After reading all the forums on this site, i changed the fuel filter @$29.99 a ten minute job, nothing. I also purchased the repair manual @ $19.99 and read the section on trouble shooting fuel systems. It noted serval times to make sure both batteries are properly charged with good conections. So i had to buy one battery $89.99. IT almost started, then i sprayed ether in the intake and it started up! It ran rough for about 5 minutes and cleared up. Thank the LORD! I hope this info is helpful, good luck i love my truck.

2005 F250 FX Turbo Diesel: Every since the Emission Control Recall I have had nothing but trouble with my truck. It blew the Turbo hose, the Turbo Clamp snapped apart like it was paper, then the thermostat blew, the coolant went somewhere, the alternator has been replaced twice, the batteries are on their second time being replaced (because the alternator over charged them. They have replaced just about everything under the hood (the engine looks new) but the issues are still there. It runs hot, it looses power for no reason when I am driving down the road, sometimes the motor rives up for no reason while I'm driving. The rear gaskets were leaking and had to be replace, the fuel regulator had to be replaced, the coolant resovoir has been replace twice because the engine gets so hot is forces the fluid out & breaks the seams. Ford still does not no why it is running so hot, my temp gauges don't reflect over heating.

Am I alone or has anyone had all these problems?

2000 Ford Excursion 7.3 turbo will not start everytime. It seems to do this the 3rd time I attempt to start the truck during the coarse of a day. We have replaced the starter, the alternator, one battery within the last 2 weeks. Today We replaced an ignition relay, I think. Not sure, but, whatever It did not start this evening after our Tee-Ball game where it sits.

Previously it would start after approximately 45min from the time I would attempt to start the truck the first time. Lately it was taking about 1 1/2 hours before she would crank. Tonight We couldn't wait any longer than 2 hrs.

We have had no issues with the truck stalling or shutting down at 80 mph. The factory alarm is not being used because We have learned that none of the electric locks work. We have been told that each of the individual door lock motors are broken. Although We have had the truck for about 6 months, We did not have this starting problem until about 3 weeks ago. We have discussed this with many mechanics and No one can help us. Ford people are clueless.

Does this issue sound familiar to anyone? We are about to lose our minds. Please help SOON!

Thanks, Marlon

There is a light that is coming on. It looks like a gas symbol and asterisks next to it. I think it means that the gas filter needs replacing. Anyone know? Also where exactly would the gas filter be located? With the cost of everything right now, I am trying to save money and replace the filter if it is the flter myself.

Tend to agree here with Barry (Reply #27). I also have a 99 F250SD Turbo Diesel. All the time that I have had the truck, loss of power, stalling and eventually no start has been a recurring problem. Every time I replace the fuel relay I'm good for another 60, 000 miles and then the problem starts all over again.

Also, if you live in an area where you have winter temperatures of minus 10C or 15F DO NOT INSTALL A K&N AIR FILTER. It brings in too much cold air and fuel continually gels regardless of how much conditioner you put in the fuel tank. It took me 3 winters, many walks home in freezing temperatures and a few thousand dollars in wasted shop costs to get the problem resolved. One shop after another did nothing but take my money. Through a process of elimination my son and I finally figured out that the fuel was gelling. We went back to the factory air filter and have had no further problem. Hope this helps.

P.S. Watch out for less than honest shops as there are lots of them out there. What should have been two simple fixes ended up costing me $8, 000.00 with no solution. My son and I diagnosed both problems ourselves. Ain't it a great world out there. Don't be afraid to go with your gut feelings as they will often be close to the source of the problem.

I have a 04 F250 6.0 diesel. All of a sudden my check engine light came on and now when the truck cools down it has no power and when you try to accelerate it bellows black smoke and chugs. The check engine light code is low injector pressure on all 8 injectors, it runs fine once you drive it about 2 miles. I woud apprecaite it if anyone knows what the probem is.

Thanks, Randy

1999 F250 7.3L Diesel. I have replaced the glow plug relay twice 4 years apart for hard to start and white smoke after starting. It is worth checking on any truck that is hard to start. Both batteries need good connection and holding a good charge. I am about to ready to buy the third set of batteries when I replace the alternator. Multiple things can go wrong when the voltage is low. I hope that this helps others.

I CURRENTLY HAVE A 2003 F250 DIESEL AND WHEN I WENT OUT TO START IT IT WOULDN'T EVEN TURN OVER. THE POWER WINDOWS WORK, RADIO, LIGHTS, ETC. SO, WHEN I CALLED AAA THE GUY CAME OUT AND TRIED TO GIVE ME A JUMP (BOTH BATTERIES) AND SAID THAT WAS NOT THE PROBLEM. ALTHOUGH, IT DID MAKE ATLEAST A LITTLE BIT OF A SOUND WHEN THE CABLES WERE HOOKED UP. ANY IDEAS?

Most of the problems I have erad were ones I had on my 95

F350 7.3 power stroke, and solved by changing the cam positioning sensor myself. But now after running on the highway for twenty minutes or longer when I stop and take off again, after a few gears it dies, check engine light appears, won't start for a couple of hours, ( or maybe until it completly cools off), Then starts and runs fine again? Any input would be appreciated.

Shaking Truck Upon StartUp: 1997, F-250 Heavy Duty Turbo Diesel. I am having problems with my otherwise extremely dependable F-250. About a week ago, I started the truck, it started, but it started to shake (similiar to when it seems to not be getting enough fuel). This happens every time - whether the truck is cold in the morning or even if its warmed up (like running for 25 minutes on the road). When starting the truck and I step on the accelerator, the truck seems to settle out (does not shake), but when I ease up on the accelerator it starts to shake again. Also, this shaking will evenutally go away if I let the truck idle long enough without any intervention (i.e., step on the accelerator). I have timed it; I've started the truck and just let it shake, it will shake anywhere from 10 seconds to just over a minute, typically it is about 20- 30 seconds. I have changed the fuel filter, but no go. Help??

One of my F-250s 1995 starts and runs like a top cold. Once it is warm it won't start. Cranks great just won't start. Let it sit for an hour and it starts and runs great. I checked the fuel filter and it was filthy and hadn't been changed for quite some time. Between the folds it had thick scum. I was sure this must be impeding fuel flow but despite changing out the filter and allowing any water out the bottom no improvement. Also should mention that before my employee brought me the truck to deal with, he had a mechanic replace the cam sensor. Supposedly this fixed some problems he had in the past. Neither of them thought to check the fuel filter so I question whether cam sensors were ever a problem. So where next?

Hi, I have a 2000 F-250 SD 7.3 diesel with 110000 miles and have not had a bit of trouble until 2-3 weeks ago where it became hard to start. It would crank 3 - 5 seconds and not start then trying it again, it would start. I started it drove 0.5 mile stopped then it would not start but would crank. I must have tried it 6 - 8 times, it would crank but not start. I had it towed to the Ford shop $600. later they said a sensor was bad and a connector was bad. Got it home let it set a day then tried to start it and it was hard to start, crank for 3-5 seconds then stop and crank again for 3-5 seconds and it started. It seems like when it is hard to start, if it will start, after it is run, it will start normally. The exception was when it would not start at all. $600. a pop for troubleshooting is a bit much. In the service when you could not find out what was wrong with an item and just changed something, we called that shot gunning. I can't afford much more of that. It is still summertime here in New Mexico and does not get very cold at night , yet. Does any one have any ideas?

Hi, Here is some additional info for my 'Hard to Start problem' Changed oil, oil level is ok. Changed Fuel Filter(Top of Engine)it was really dirty. Still have problems starting in the morning. Once started, it seems to start normally? Even though is cranks normally, could a battery cause a problem like this? Thanks, George

I have a 2004 Ford F-550 6.0 diesel that starts fine, but when you hit the accelerator... nothing. The rpm's don't rev up unless I have it in N. There is a definate power lag that takes several minutes from the time I hit the pedal to reach the engine. I recently had the both filters and the fuel pump replaced because it would only run for a short period of time then die. Now I have been running into this problem. Any reason as to why? I have to cycle the engine several times and try to get it warmed up before any power gets put to the engine to get it going.

Thanks

I am upset with Ford Motor company! I bought my ford diesel truck new thinking that I had a vehicle that would last me for years and years and it should for what I paid for it! I have had this truck back to the dealer many times for loss of power problems under warranty and they never corrected the problem and now that the truck is out of warranty I have had all 8 injectors changed out and some sensors and I still had problems! Now My truck has 75, 000 miles on it and it runs like crap!

and I took the truck to another dealer and they checked the truck out and found out the trouble all along was the cam sensor ring, so I was told to repair this problem I would need a new short block! Sure enough, when they took the motor apart they found that the tack welds on the cam sensor ring broke loose and the ring would shift on the crank and give false codes to the sensor and cause the fuel to flow to the engine and cause it to smoke with unburned fuel and loss of power!

some times the engine would run good and then it would run rough and smoke!

So this is the problem that I have had and what had to be done to correct it! Now it runs like a brand new truck!

Ford wouldn't take care of this and told me that it was my problem! Since this wasn't corrected under warranty I think this is a problem that Ford should take care of!

The dealer that I bought the truck from did not have a diesel mechanic, he was a butcher and broke off bolts and left bolts off of the engine when he worked on it. I didn't find this out untill the other dealer I took it to, found all these problems and installed new bolts where there was none!

This goes to show that just because you take your truck back to a Ford dealer, you don't know if you have a qualified mechanic doing the work! I am now seeking a good lawyer!

I have a 2005 F250 diesel. Starts fine, idles fine but sometimes won't accelerate from a stop. Once it's moving it runs good and only sometimes when I stop it sputters like it's about to stall when I try to get it moving. Will idle, no problem shutting it off and restarting the engine but just won't accelerate from a stop. Truck has new air and fuel filters. Any suggestions?

Sounds like my 2004 F250 was doing the same as your truck was doing! Take it in to a good diesel mechanic and let him check it out!

I have 2005 F250 diesel it turns over but does not start. I wet down a rag with some gas and put it over the intake housing, the engine started, it stays running as long as some one holds the gas down and the truck is at about 2500 rpms but if you let off the gas it dies I have changed all the filter could it be the cam position sensor or crank position sensor the truck is not showing any codes
