Hi Dena, I saw no one replied to your question so though I'd help just in case you still are wondering.
The overdrive is ON by default each time you start your truck, as it should be for most normal driving conditions around town, on highway, even long trips. It is saving you gas while it is on.
If you push the button on the end of the gear selector it will turn OFF the overdrive and should be indicated by a light that will come on. My "96" displays a light that says "OD OFF". Turning off the overdrive is ideal when towing a trailer, or any other time you might not want the automatic transmission to use the overdrive.
For example:
When you are using "2" or "L" gear for the purpose of "engine braking" in LOWER SPEEDS.
OR
When driving through areas with steep hills/inclines. Turning off the overdrive can stop that non stop up and down shifting the transmission will sometimes do at higher speeds while climbing hills.
Hope this helps.
