I have a 2006 F250 6.0L and have a similar problem with the 4X4 not working. The lights come on in the dash but the truck will not automatically lock into 4 wheel drive. I have to get out of the truck to manually lock the hubs. Then it works. Its too cold to get out of my truck all of the time. I am having the same problem in my 05' model as well. I was told it was the actuator. I got a new one, intalled it but the problem is still there. Help its muddy out here, I'm stuck and I can't get out.

My 4wd will not engage even if I lock the hubs. I don't get any lights on in the dash. I've tried replacing the 4wd switch and the 4wd control module with no luck. I checked wires for voltage and continuity according to a ford schematic from a ford dealer. all fuses are good. I'm stumped and need help looking for any common problems and if anybody knows what the fix might be.

I have a 2003 F250. The 4X4 turns off unexpectedly during use. Since my truck is in the shop right now, it is working fine.. apparently the warmer weather allows it out work properly. They can't fix what does not appear to be broken, but I know something is wrong. Something goes wrong when it's cold. Sometimes it will engage ... and often it won't. It's not the locking hubs. Any help? Thanks

Check the O ring seal on the vacuum or hydraulic engaging system. was replaced for me under warranty and works OK now

I own a 2004 F-250 and have a slightly different problem. I engage the 4x4 by turning the switch. However, when I try to take it out of 4x4 nothing happens. Now I'm stuck in 4x4. I've locked/unlocked the hubs, run it through all gears, etc. and nothing. Took it to the Ford dealer and they reset it. Said I need a new switch - $350.00. I've used the switch less than 20 times. Anyone aware of any recalls/warranty work on switch?

I have a 2004 f-250 super duty lariat with the 6.0 diesel in it. Not too long ago my 4x4 quit working. It will not light up on the dash or even act like its trying to go into 4 wheel drive. I bought a new switch and put in and nothing. I got underneath it and there is no fire going to the motor on the transfer case. So I figured it was a relay. The guy at the ford place said that model does not have a realy but has some kind of module behind the fuse panel and it is probably bad. My question is does that sound like my problem and if it is how hard is it to change. He saide it had to be programmed and everything. Also, since the hubs are automatic does that mean that the manual locks on the wheels are jsut for show? Tha is what somebody told me but it seems unlikely.

I have a similar dilema... My 2002 f250 diesel wont get out of 4x4 mode. At first they told me to replace the multifunction module (g.e.m.) But when I removed the fuse panel it wasnt there... I guess i will try replacing the switch...

I had the same problem or so i thought, my cousin is a ford mechanic, i called him, gave him my vin # and he looked it up in his thenical data base, apparently all f250 -f550 4x4 with electronic shifts dont have a problem, it stated that all electronic 4x4 operations can take up to 1 minute to completly engage, not allowing the proper time for the electronic shifts or engaging to complete can result in "false customer concern" it tells the mechanics not to replace anything untill it has been tested with the alloted time for the electronics to engage.... i know, i know..... a minute????????... thats the first time he has evan read that, but thats what the professional technician database says, hopefully it works out for everybody

I have an 2003 f250 and it has both auto/manual 4x4 should a light come on when you manually turn the hubs to lock and you have to still use the switch in the truck to get low and high.Ford told me that the manual lock is not release proper i guess it is slow to release and they said just drive it in 4x4 when you go up the bush and it might start releaseing proper as i just bought the truck from ford. The truck was sitting for awhile on their lot. When you put it in 4x4 it makes a clunking sounds.

I own a 2001 F350 and the same thing is happening with my 4x4 no lights on in the dash, I have checked everything including the green wire that was broken on the main harness that is located on the drivers side fender. I also have checked the motor on the t-case and works fine, I also have checked the power on the relays and if you look at the relays power is on 86, 87. I even took the whole harness out and looked at all the wires and found nothing. I spoke with the garage and they said to run a ground wire from battery to the orange/blue wire and brown/white wire to hear if the motor on the t-case moves, it did, I also heard the relays clicking. After doing all this I still don't have 4x4. I also have a used gem that I have not tired yet but the only thing not working is the 4x4 everything else works. I also moved the shift motor lever on t-case and it moves no probelm by hand but seems to be no power hitting the relays. I also have looked for a damaged wire in the harness that leads into the cab and unable to find one that is damaged. Is anyone else having this same problem?? On the relays on the side they have numbers 86, 87, 87a, 85 and 30. Please let me know for our locale dealers don't know what to look for next.

I just bought a used 2006 f250. had it for a week it has the full manual habs on it. went to use 4wheel and nothing happened. next day took the hubs apart. both hubs came off in pieces and not a drop of lub in there. i suggest anyone check to see if your hubs are greased up real good, for proper engagement.

Brent, what year is your truck, you can check the wires that are near the fuse box you might have one that is broken and grounding. also check the wires that lead to your relays, they should be by the fuse box where your fuse keeps blowing. Also is there anything else not working? or just your 4x4?

Mikee, check your u joints at the ends of the front shaft and each front wheel, you can check them by moving them by hand. Another thing is to put the vehicle on jack stands and run the truck in 4x4 to see what side the noise is coming from. It sounds like a u joint that is going, check the u joints to see if there is a grease nipple on them, if so grease them and try it. If you place the vehicle on jack stands stay in the vehicle and don't go to fast. (safety first). A u joint from Ford is around $50.00 to $100.00. You will be able to get them cheaper at other auto parts places. If this is not the problem then it might be the t-case. You will have to hear where the noise is coming from first. Hope this helps.
