1995 ford f150 in line 6 5speed manual-need to replace ignition switch

I am having trouble with the ignition switch. It is difficult to rotate to start. It appears that the outer ring is not lining up properly with the ingition cylinder. You need to jiggle the key to get it to turn then it is fine. It seems to be a little loose in the column. It seems to be getting worse. My wife was strand because of the isusse. I have removed part of the trim but am was unable to remove the trim from around the ingition. The out ring is to large to go thtough the round opening. Is there a way to remove the outer ring? Does the steering wheel neeed to be removed to access the ignition. I am hesitant to doto that because of the airbag. Any advice would be appreciated. This is a 1995 ford f150 inline 6 with amannual 5 speed.
