There is a latch inside the frame of the back door. You have to switch the latch to unlock and they will then allow someone in the back seat to open the doors.

I see Diane did not answer your question. I also have a 2002 Ford explorer sport trac where I can not disable the child proof door lock. The little levers at the rear of the door will flip up and down with a positive click but has no effect on being able to open the rear door from the inside. I hope some one picks up on this defect with a fix. I am willing to completely and permanently disable this feature if I knew how.

I have a 2000 Ford Expediton - this problem seems to also relate to the Explorer. I can switch the child-proof door switch on the edge of the door to open, but sometimes the switch will move to closed and someone has to open the door from the outside. This applies to both the left and right rear doors. Is this a product defect, or am I doing something wrong?

Holy Canoli! I wanted to give Ford a chance since they didn't still billions from the taxpayer even when the gang was trying to draw them in... but quality is still only an advertisement as far as I can tell. Half way through the test drive I went to switch with my wife. She couldn't get out so I had to open her door. So, I flipped the child safety lock. When we stopped, I couldn't get out so the salesman had to open it from the outside. I again flipped it. I went to the other side to get the baby seat and tried the door from the inside. Still wouldn't open. Wow. They actually drove this pile of crap off of the show room floor for us to drive. If the doors don't even open no telling what nightmares we could have. Very, very sad. Go United Autoworkers of America! Ford even has a study where they claim to be better in quality!

1998 (2000) Expedition....child safety lock often kicked in by itself. SOLVEDI wedged it down with a rubber plug. - ALL OK for ~ 3 years. Then lock "activated" even with lever DOWN. All is FINE NOW - see below. From www.topix.com /forum/autos/ Rick Milton, Canada Remove the plastic cover around the lock lever. Spray a light penatrating oil (wd-40) in and around the lock leaver mechanisim and work the mechanisim up and down several times. This should free up the small gravity lock inside the mechanism.
