A 98 Explorer does NOT have a replaceable upper ball joint, the upper control arm is sold as a complete kit with inner bushings and outer ball joint.I highly recommend replacing with a Moog system and doing both sides at the same time (OEM parts will need replacing every 5 or so years). One will a be a one piece the other two pieces (I think the two piece is the passenger if I remember correctly). I replaced BOTH sides with two piece replacements so that I can just unbolt the outer half if I need to replace upper ball joints again. Moog ball joints also have a grease nipple so you can pump them up instead of replacing them each time. They are pretty cheap on Ebay!
