Wife has 2002 Ford Explorer 4x4. Couple of weeks ago began making clunking noise when she applied brakes and now today as she was coming in driveway from work noticed loud grinding noise from left front wheel area. Haven't had time to check out yet w/all the rain. Ideas?

Probably needs brakes. If you leave it to long it will need rotors as well.OR If it is more noisy when the truck turns one way and is less obvious when she turns the other it is probably a hub bearing. I have replaced both on my 95 Explorer.

The grinding noise is probably caused by bad wheel bearings. I suggest purchasing new bearings from the link below.

I am having the same problem with my 04 explorer xlt. IT IS NOT THE WHEEL BEARINGS. I had took my truck to the shop today and explained the same problem lound grinding noise at the FRONT LEFT WHEEL. And also from time to time a whining noise like maybe the truck is going into 4X4. The mechanic inseasted it was the front right wheel bearing where the problem was coming from and not the LEFT where I reported it. So he cahanged both wheel bearings and brake pads up front. Same noise still going on and $1, 014.86 out of pocket and nothing fixed. I am going to go pull it out of his shop today and let someone else look at it I guess. the Mechanic never even took the truck for a test drive to hear the problem his self. Sounds like I will be going to small claims court getting my money back. Not to mention while sitting in the shop listening to the mechanic fill me up with "BS" the guy in my truck sitting on the lift, twice in a roll put my truck in park while the wheels were still turing. UGH!!! Very bad day.. Someone please help respond to e-mail address Thanks.
