Headlight Problems

I have 1996 ford explorer and my left headlight is out on lowbeam but works on high beam. I have no power going to the lowbeam on the left side. I had some smoke come out from under the dash shortly after the light went out. I can't find any bad wiring anywhere. My freind thinks its the dimmer switch but wouldn't that effect both lights instead of just one of them.
