Ford-Bronco II - starter problem

I have a '87 Bronco II that I have had for 10+ years. Recently the starter wouldn't engage, in fact, the bolts had worked loose and it wouldn't engage the flywheel. Since that time I have gone through several starters. A new (or rebuilt) starter will work absolutely perfectly for the first 2-3 weeks, then it starts to make noises and pretty soon the drive won't engage at all. At this point I add another starter and we do the same thing all over again. The starter is not loose. I went for years with no problems like this and now I am considering a velcro mount to save time. Does anyone have an idea of what is going on? I can't understand how anything can be drastically wrong when it works well and sounds good for a time after the starter is replaced. Is it possible that I am getting the wrong number of teeth, or something? When I take tha starter out the teeth on the drive look good and as far as I can see the flywheel looks OK too. This unit has a 2.9L V6 and about 140K on the odometer. It is a Bosh-type starter. I need help! Thanks

I went thru this symptom for about 4 months. I planned on changing starter thinking the bendix spring in the starter was weak. One day while doing scheduled maint., I do a pretty involved service as 20 years in Air Force demands, I cleaned battery terminals and all the connections on the starter relay. Guess what, no more starter problems. One of the terminals on the relay was the culprit.
